In the interests of provoking reasonable debate, consider this:

Japan has a culture which contains extremely violent comics and animes, and yet Tokyo is a megapolis with the lowest rate of violent crime in the world - far, far lower that any other major city. Perhaps the Japanese are better than most peoples at recognizing the difference between games and reality?

If you play this game, no-one anywhere actually gets raped. It's an illusion on a screen. Likewise, people who watch any of the SAW movies are not necessarily brutal sadists or are any more likely to become one.

There is also the possibility that such things provide a carthetic release, i.e. if you simulate it, you are less likely to do it in real life.

I love playing NFS Undergound, but I would never dream of driving through the city at 180 mph. I love playing FPS's but I'm not inclined to go on a shotgun rampage in the main street.

When all is said and done, it's just a game, an illusion; if you don't like, don't play it.
It's as simple as that.

Troob's got a point, but I think that rape is too personal and disgusting an actto be in a game. It's sickening and it's extremely demoralizing - a blatant understatement. In shooters, I can take someone's head off with a sense of accomplishment, or take out a few soldiers defending a base with a shred of pride. I think we all can. Because those objectives generally have some reason behind them (Aliens will kill us, or we need the supplies... something at least). However, "Hey I just totally raped this chick" wouldn't make me feel good at all. Imagine "BLIP! Acheivement Unlocked: Perfect Rape - 20G".

And Stockholm, Halo, you kill aliens trying to blow up EVERYTHING. EVERYTHING EVER MADE. Gears of War, you kill aliens that are invading you. Dead Rising, Left 4 Dead, etc, etc, you're killing ZOMBIES! Find the innocent victim in any of those games, please.

Shooting games. Now, shooting someone in public, that's bad, so is killing the innocent. Killing someone that wants to kill you, as is the case in most of these FPS's, is what you would call self defense. It's as good of a genre as it is because it pulls us the closest to 'serious business' as you can get; meaning, if the other guy has a gun, you took up arms to fight him. for your life.

These games are twisted and aimed to either fail at being humorous or appeal to one of humanity's deepest darknesses.

These people probably thought what most people do - shooting people in general is wrong, yet it's a popular video game; maybe if they push the boundaries they'll now become famous?

Remake must have never heard of the Postal games which are full of innocent victims to kill.

The writer of this article neglected to mention that you don't have to rape the girls in Biko 3. The game lets you choose between consensual sex or rape. This results in an appropriate ending. Case in point: if you rape the said schoolgirl, she commits suicide and the player's character is filled with regret. Taking the other route results in a better ending.
