Mario voted to the top of Guinness' 50 greatest game characters list

Guinness World Records has released the results of its online poll asking gamers to decide who the all-time greatest game characters are. More than 13,000 people participated in the vote on Guinness's official website and it looks like nostalgia stole the show, with only two post-2000 characters making the top 10. Halo's Master Chief, who originally debuted in 2001, took the number three spot, while Kratos from God of War, first seen in 2005, placed ninth...

Unless you've been off your tits on the wrong mushrooms for the last twelve months, you'll know that this year marks Mario's 25th birthday. Personally we''ve always thought he looked at least 35, but the given that the guy's spent the last two and a half decades working his arse off performing the kind of behind-enemy-lines extraction missions that would make the SAS wince, we think I can cut him some slack.

Anyway, as reward for all his years of slavish, selfless sacrifice, GamesMaster magazine are giving him his own issue. Fear not though, for the plumber will not be ousting all other gaming news with his bushy moustache of page-hogging tyranny. No, instead he's getting his own collector's edition special, which kickstarts a brand new 'GamesMaster Presents...' series of franchise-specific retrospectives. The guys from GM sit right next to us in the office, so we know it'll be good.

Hey Nintendo, you know how you're re-releasing Super Mario All-Stars for the Wii? Well why aren't you doing it like this? Don't get me wrong, I bloody adore Super Mario All-Stars, and will be picking it up for the second time as soon as I can get hold of a Wii copy. And I'll play through it with all with the same child-like glee I did the first time. But seriously, could we not have a 2.5D re-remake as well? You have had 17 years to get it ready.

A chap by the name of SKJmin has created a ROM hack of the DS' New Super Mario Bros. which converts it into Super Mario Bros. 3. What's that you say? Pics or it didn't happen? Well click on. Today's awesome but pointless news story goes as follows: The Spanish suburb of Zargoza has named a street in a new residential development Avenida de Super Mario Bros. in tribute to the greatest series of platform games in all of time. Mario seems very happy about it. And the town council seems to have plans for more video game suburbs in the future. More details inside.
