EA has announced that the Need for Speed franchise has surpassed 100 million units sold life to date.

The recent release of Need for Speed Shift pushed the franchise over the 100M mark, making it the best-selling racing brand in the gaming world. The franchise has generated over $2.7 billion in life-to-date sales.

Electronic Arts believes its forthcoming racing title Need for Speed ProStreet will win the race to become this year's Christmas number one video game.

"A Need for Speed game has been Christmas number one for four of the last five years, with FIFA only pipping it to the post last year in a debatable count back," said Steve Farrell, senior product manager at EA.

"We are confident the increased quality of the game this year Â¿ as well as our extensive marketing campaign, with support throughout the run-up to Christmas Â¿ will help to re-establish a Need For Speed game at number one."

EA has released a brand new trailer for the upcoming racer, Need For Speed: Pro Street. And this one's all about the smoke effects. There's not that long to go now until the launch of EA's new Need For Speed title; it's out around October. This time round the focus is on realism, but it's not really going after the likes of GT or Forza. "We're definitely not looking to make a simulation. Former Big Brother contestant Krystal Forscutt has taken her first step towards international fame by being chosen as a character in a popular video game.

Forscutt is one of two females who feature as a digital version of themselves in Need For Speed's new ProStreet computer game, to be released later this year, with a potential worldwide audience of 40 million gamers.

"It's my first sort of international appearance, I guess," Forscutt told the Sunday Telegraph.
