The DS has been around for five years? Strange as it sounds, it’s true – the DS launched in the US on November 21, 2004 to almost immediate success, and is well on its way to outselling every other major gaming platform in history. Current numbers put the DS (and its various incarnations) at nearly 115 million units sold worldwide, a runaway lead over Sony’s estimated 60 million PSPs ...

With Other M on the way next year, some might have thought that the Prime series had come to an end but, as Nintendo's Kensuke Tanabe told ONM, the series may still have a future.

Asked whether Samus will ever return to DS, Tanabe (who oversaw Retro Studios' series for Nintendo) said "We are always planning to make new games in the Metroid Prime series. Depending on the timing and the situation, we cannot deny the possibility of realising it on DS or DSi."

411mania gives a rundown on this week's game releases. Highlights include Prinny: Can I Really Be the Hero?, Street Fighter IV, DoDonPachi Daioujou Black Label Extra, Shooting Love, Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon, Metroid Prime Wii.

Prinny: Can I Really Be the Hero? (PSP)
Prinny: Can I Really Be the Hero? is one of the best platformers I've played in years thanks to it's tight controls and above average presentation. However, this game is definitely not for everyone. In fact, I'm pretty sure that only hardcore platformer junkies and people with infinite amounts of patience will get past the first three or four stages without developing a desire to throw their PSPs at a wall in rage. But if you can hang on, getting through the game can be quite satisfying and is an achievement that is worth bragging about.

Street Fighter IV (PS3, 360)
It isn't necessary for me to go in-depth since every other site is already doing it. I will, however, bring to your attention one of the coolest features SFIV has - the Arcade Request system. Basically, instead of watching a static screen while waiting for someone to challenge you online, this system allows you to play against the computer and seamlessly accept a challenge when one comes your way. It's like going to an arcade and playing against the CPU until someone gets the nerve to plunk down fifty cents to take you on. If you set it to accept only Player Matches (unranked) you can keep things going by rematching or, if you don't want to play the person again, you can quickly and easily go back to arcade mode after your match and continue on with the CPU until you get another challenge. It's hard to believe that it's taken Capcom this long to implement such a system. I can only hope that SNK does the same thing in its home version of KOF XII.

DoDonPachi Daioujou Black Label Extra (360 Import)
Every shooter needs its own hook to stand out. While Trigger Heart has its grapple syst...
Like its predecessor Metroid Prime, Nintendo has dubbed it a first-person adventure rather than a first-person shooter due to the large amount of exploration elements in the game, classic to any Nintendo title.
It really makes you wonder what exactly they’ve got left to pull out of their puffy red hat. Sure, we can speculate about the likelihood of Kid Icarus and Star Fox until we’re blue in the wrist, but never with 100% ...

The Metroid series has always been a victim of bad timing. It's one of the most critically acclaimed franchises in gaming. But thanks to dodgy release dates, internal politics and Nintendo's own disbelief in the franchise that's never quite rivalled the mighty Mario and Zelda series. Wrong place, wrong time?

1986; Atari was old news and the NES had successfully prevented the industry from spiralling into an imploding crash. 33-year-old Shigeru Miyamoto's hot-selling Super Mario ...
This is hardcore. Or so everyone says. But what is "hardcore?" To us gamers, it means the kind of game that serious gamers devote their time to. You know, hundreds of hours of time. The kind of game that kept Granny away from gaming until Wii came along. It's about depth - of learning and understanding a game before truly mastering it. Hardcore games present the greatest (and often longest) challenges, yet also the biggest payoffs, assuming you understand how they work.

Of course, ...
What's this? A handheld, first-person shooter that crams in all the headshots, layered level designs and multiplayer options of the typical Xbox Live title? And it's on the touch-screen powered Nintendo DS? If we hadn't played it ourselves we would barely believe it.

But it's true. Metroid Prime Hunters takes the usually explorative, space-faring series online in the biggest possible way: its stylus-and-L-button control scheme (think PC's mouse-and-keyboard setup) scorches every other portable ...
What began as a bizarre shot in the dark has fast become one of the biggest success stories in video games. Even though its first six months were rough and questionable, the DS currently owns the handheld market, and with good reason. There's literally something for everyone on the dual-screened portable, and its beautiful cosmetic makeover (known as the DS Lite) made the device all the more palatable to hardcore and casual gamers alike. With its mixture of brain teasing puzzle games, ...

According to a recent email sent to Sk8land community members, the incoming Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam DS will feature a couple online features new to the Nintendo DS. One of the most impressive is the in-game voice chat, by which Vicarious Visions means you can talk to your friends during gameplay and not only in the pre-game lobby like Metroid Prime: Hunters.
God Save the Wii
Our friends on the other side of the pond got their Wii news today, but it was a bit of good and bad. While Sony will make Brit gamers wait until 2007 for their PS3s, the Wii will hit UK shores on December 8 for £180. That's still more than the US price if you work out the exchange rate and it's just £20 less than an Xbox 360 Core pack. Even the UK Virtual Console games will be the equivalent of a few bucks more expensive than in the US and Japan. And while the ...
Chaos, mayhem, uproar and riots. That's what GamesRadar seems to have triggered with last week's feature, "The Ten Greatest Years in Videogame History ". We might as well have burned down the internet, for all the email and forum flaming we inspired. Some folks praised us, some wanted us crucified, and one called us "wankers", ignoring that the feature only covered the US market.

Granted, we set ourselves up. We knew this feature was so vast, so subjective and so dependent upon reader ...
An online, handheld deathmatch is about to take over your Nintendo DS. Metroid Prime Hunters is just a few days away, and its seven tough-as-nails bounty hunters (heroine Samus included) are going to do everything in their armor-cracking, shape-shifting power to put you under. Curious as to how it is you're going down?

From the official Hunters website:

"Samus Aran is well known throughout the galaxy as an efficient and experienced bounty hunter. Few other hunters can compete with Samus' long ...
Other than a roster of all new, alien bounty hunters and an emphasis on touch screen, multiplayer deathmatching, all we could say about Metroid Prime Hunters before today was that we'd jump into the shadiest fight club around to get our hands on it. Now, after spending some quality time torching, bombing and bashing three other players in Wi-Fi match ups, we can safely say the wait will be worth it.

The first aspect to zero in on is how non-traditional the fragging is. The six hunters and ...
Hard as it is to believe now, Metroid's switch from side-scrolling corridor sprint to first person adventure freaked everyone out. Running and gunning, after all, was never the core of heroine Samus' purview. Today, though, the series is one of Nintendo's most successful, and the bounty hunter couldn't be in a better position to try new things. Case in point: Metroid Prime Hunters is a fast action shooter that plays down the series' deliberately paced gameplay.
