Buried in today's Elecrtonic Arts earnings call was this amazing revelation from COO John Pleasants: Revenue for music/rhythm games was down 36% during the first quarter of the year and 42% in March, per NPD. As a result, EA has cut the gross sales revenue it expects from its EA Partner division, which distributes "Rock Band" for Viacom.

That's a huge decline. And keep in mind that there weren't any major music game releases during the first quarter of last year, while 2009 saw "Guitar Hero: Metallica" (albeit at the very end of March). As we started to see in late 2008, sales of "Rock Band 2" and "Guitar Hero: World Tour" must be down massively from the original "Rock Band" and "Guitar Hero III."

And while EA CEO John Riccitiello said he feels "really bullish" about "Rock Band: Beatles Edition," the fact that the company is expecting $400 million less in sales indicates just how big an impact continued sales of "Rock Band" through last year mattered, and how far "Rock Band 2" is lagging.

Motamedia unveils truck ads for DS Guitar Hero (News)

Motamedia has unveiled the vehicle advertising plan for Activision's forthcoming Nintendo DS edition of its hugely popular music game - Guitar Hero On Tour.

A fleet of 30- and 40-foot trucks will carry advertising for the game, which is out now in the UK, and hopes to reach "a wide audience in areas largely uncluttered with other forms of advertising," the company said.

"We are delighted to be part of the nationwide launch of Guitar Hero on Tour and to be assisting such a leading player in the worldwide games industry," Motamedia MD Colin Smith added.

Activision has unveiled the track list for the DS game Guitar Hero: On Tour in magazine Nintendo Power, and it looks like it will please teeny boppers who have never heard of Jimi Hendrix.

The selection boasts such Guitar-based 'classics' as This Love by Maroon 5 and All Star by Smash Mouth.

Not to take anything away from Blink 182 or No Doubt, but we wonder if the developer has forgotten that these games are enjoyable ...

Vooks were lucky enough to be invited to have an 'Eyes-On' look at Activision's Guitar Hero: On Tour for the Nintendo DS. It is being developed by Vicarious Visions, the fine people responsible for the Wii version of Guitar Hero 3. Unfortunately with it being an eyes-on look, it meant Vooks were unable to play the game themselves. But rest assured, Vooks got a very good look at the title and hardware, and Vooks are in a very good position to pass judgement.

Guitar Hero is officially coming to DS, with Guitar Hero: On Tour. But how is a game that uses a guitar attachment going to work on the tiny Nintendo DS? Simple: A guitar attachment especially for DS, called a "Guitar Grip" that has the tried and true fret buttons (but it looks like only 4 buttons will be used). More than a year ago, Activision revealed that the company was interested in branching its Guitar Hero franchise onto platforms such as the Nintendo DS. It's been a long wait, but the company has finally revealed exclusively to IGN and Yahoo the Guitar Hero game that will soon hit the dual-screen handheld later this year.

The Nintendo DS version -- Guitar Hero: On Tour -- is in development at Vicarious Visions, the team best known for the Tony Hawk and Spider-Man series on the dual-screen handheld, as well as the Nintendo Wii conversion of Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock released late last year. This portable version will feature the same rhythm-based "play to the music" gameplay of the big boys, and will even have its own peripheral to get the job done: Red Octane has developed what it's calling the Guitar Grip to give players the ability to finger chords in similar fashion as the console version's guitar peripheral.

If it wasn't already blatantly obvious with the patent registration and hints from Activision executives the Guitar Hero franchise is now barring confirmation from Activision itself heading to the Nintendo DS. The OFLC's website has been updated with a listing for Guitar Hero on Tour, the registration for the game specifically mentions the Nintendo DS (if it were Mutliplatform it would say). We await for more information from Activision but one thing we can confirm too is that it got a G rating.
