Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars

VIDEO: First trailer finally reveals the Nintendo DS game in action [UPDATED]

Bout time! Having played a substantial portion of Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, we can honestly say that teensy screenshots really don’t do the game the justice it deserves. Luckily, watching the new top-down, stylized world come alive is the very thing adult gamers need to remind them they still own a Nintendo DS.

While you may’ve seen that recent GameStop commercial and its split second of gameplay, today’s OFFICIAL trailer features a little more of Chinatown Wars in motion. Look closely and you can make out the corpse lying in a pool of blood, the windshield shattering and dumpster diving stylus games, and protagonist Huang Lee tearing up Liberty City on a motorcycle.

It’s also worth noting that the song in the trailer (“Like a Renegade” by Ghostface Killah and MF Doom!) was commissioned exclusively for Chinatown Wars. Not so coincidentally, perk up those ears and you’ll hear Mr. Killah subtly hint at specific plot details. What a poet!

UPDATE: Rockstar just sent us a new video, and thankfully it’s a damned good one showcasing the more unique aspects of the gameplay. Above you’ll see Huang Lee pull a stunt jump, aid in a drive-by shooting, and jack someone’s ride with a little stylus-based hotwiring. But the highlight by far is the violently arcade-style burnout. Take off with a boost and you’ll spit flames from the back of the car, igniting anyone fool enough to be standing close-by.

The game streets March 17th, so you can be damned sure we’ll have a review coming very soon.

DS advertisements never do the graphics any justice. I'm sure the graphics will be fine

I hope I'm not starting anything bad here, but I have this small problem with Chinatown Wars. I've heard the arguments against mine all before, but I have a point I'd like to make.

Yes, I'm referring to the drug selling element. Yes, I'm aware of the point that violence in video games is seen as acceptable in comparison ironically. Well you see, that's thing.

You can't exactly get away with murder in real life, but I guarentee you can count at least five people right now in your head you know most likely is a drug dealer/does drugs. It just seems kind of sad to have that in a game, especially on a handheld game device that generally markets its games to kids... Does anyone see where I'm going with this?

Yeah I see where you are going red... towards more censorship.

I'm sure to any logical discerning mind China Town wars (as with an GTA) will teach us why NOT to get into selling drugs. I mean your character is imprisoned/dies every 15 minutes, seems like a pretty good deterrent (assuming we can differentiate that real life prison doesn't only cost a small fee and you're a free man; and that death is pretty final).

And I'm happy if DS starts to break its target audience mold a bit, I'm one more exclusive from buying the damn thing.

Sorry Red, I gotta disagree. The drug system is surprisingly deep, with far more strategy than the screenshots indicate, and in no way tailored to a youthful DS audience that primarily enjoys training tiny monsters and petting puppies.

Furthermore, just like in real life, drug dealing in GTA: CTW is complex, dangerous, and entirely optional.

Uh red shut up if you dont like the drug dealing then dont get the dang thing keep those types of comments to your self you sound like a soccer mom.
