It’s not hard to find articles poking fun at or cataloging the discrepancies of videogame box art. Hell, we’ve written our fair share and even have an annual “worst box art” feature that posts every December. But has anyone ever stopped to discuss the actual packaging said box art is printed on? How many of us really notice the subtle changes our boxes go through during each console generation? Have you noticed at all? Do you even care?
Of course you do. You love games enough to visit a site that’s known for writing about this exact kind of esoteric nonsense. In fact, you probably noticed how much the 360 and PS3 cases have changed in just the past year. So without further yammering let’s get into a big ol’ list of game boxes through the ages...
We’ve all read countless “best franchise of all time” lists, and while they’re fun to write and then to argue about, there’s an inherent problem with the “all time” part – you have to consider the 30+ years of gaming history before you get to the modern generation. Heavy hitters like Zelda, Mario, Halo, Warcraft, Metal Gear and GTA are virtually guaranteed a place on the list, so how can there be much room left over for games of right now?
That’s why we’re ousting the old guard and choosing the best of the current generation. No decades-old legacies to consider, just the stuff that’s been dreamt up since 360/PS3/DS/Wii took control beginning in 2005. Our only criteria: you gotta be a NEW game that’s blossomed into a full-blown series and will likely carry on for years. And before we even start, sorry Red Dead – you either began with Red Dead Revolver (last gen) or are a fresh start with Redemption, meaning you’re not quite a “franchise” just yet...
Games are no stranger to wild crossover events. From Smash Bros to Marvel vs Capcom, we’ve seen some of the industry’s biggest names go head-to-head for years now. But as games become increasingly expensive to produce and market, publishers are always on the lookout for the “sure thing,” something that’ll appeal to a wide audience right out of the gate. What better bet than more crossovers between existing, surefire hits?
