The shortest game names of all time

Because sometimes just one syllable will do

Words: Brett Elston, GamesRadar US

Earlier this year we deduced that Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Eye of the Beholder II – The Legend of Darkmoon is the longest game name out there. Reader comments quickly proved there were a few names out there just as long or even longer, but will you be able to find a name that’s shorter than those on this list?

Collected here are the simplest, monosyllabic game names we could dig up. By limiting our search to one word and one syllable we’ve been able to weed out seemingly tiny names like Ico, Oni and Uno, while games like Grid and Pure still make the cut.

Now, in descending order, the shortness:

Worms
Spawn
SPRay
Realm
Hoops
Sqoon
Zoom!
Doom
NARC
KORE
MULE
Spore
Flock!
Joust
Skate
Gods
Moon
Ruse
Braid
Hook
Goal!
Jaws
DiRT
Trog!
Flink
Pure
Cars
Prey
Myst
Saw
Plok
Klax
Grid
Golf
Lair
One
LOL
Rez
Bolt
Wet
Vay
Qix
LIT
Ys

That brings us to the last batch. What could possibly be shorter than Ys? Why, a trio of games that are merely one lonely character.

First up is 9, a game that bafflingly combines the talents of Robert De Niro, Cher, Christopher Reeve and James Belushi (as “Salty”), plus Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, into one clunky PC adventure title. We’d go on, but these guys have already spent enough time tracking down all the trivia.

Next is N. Just the letter N. You probably know it better as N+, the enhanced version of the free web game. You’re a little ninja silhouette running around collecting gems. Simple name, simple game. But, there’s a game we say ranks even higher (lower?) on the list, and that’s PlayStation crap-terpiece D.

Imagine playing Myst, only you’re a girl that looks, acts and talks like a stone-faced, emotionless robot. Frustrating puzzles, ghastly graphics and terrible voice acting made this a pain to play even in the ‘90s, but today, well, the most notable thing about it is that it’s the shortest name we could find.

But why’s it shorter than N or 9? If we assign numerical values to the alphabet, N is 14 and D is 4, making it smaller than N’s value plus smaller than the number 9. What, did you think there was going to be some kind of grand point to all this? It’s just for fun.

Speaking of fun, D is not fun.

PS – The D stands for Dracula

"Solving the Mystery Means Visiting the Dark Pit of Your Soul"

How could a title with a catch phrase like that not be a blockbuster hit?

ps - why the big box for D? 2 discs maybe?

The scary thing is, they made an even worse sequel, D2, for the Dreamcast... or it didn't get released. Nothing is easy for the D series, and that is why I don't cry myself to sleep at night.

It's in a big box because it's one of the earliest PlayStation games. Anything released from 9-9-95 to roughly 9-96 came in those tall cases. The first PS game I bought with a regular CD case was Jumping Flash 2.

Wow, good list Brett. I can't think of any shorter game name. I wanted to say One, for the PS1, but it's written out, not in numerical form.

But I thought this was about the game that took up the least amount of space on a page when typed out, just like the other article was about the names that took up the most amount of space typed out.
For instance: Lair is lower on the list than Saw, and Braid is lower on the list than NARC.
In that case, 9 should win.

GRID?

Now hang on just a second - the game 'N' actually uses a LOWERCASE n for it's title - I would argue that's actually LOWER than D. In size, amount of pixels, and alphabetical 'rank'.

You guys forgot WTF (Work Time Fun), the japanese PSP minigame compilation;

Also, I agree 9 should win since the list before it is grouped taking into consideration the space it takes on the page.

9
D
N

9 is a wee bit shorter.

Ravenbom, this is Brett Elston. Do you expect it to make sense? Not that you don't make sense Mr. Elston its just that... uh... I'm gonna shut up now

I remember before D was released it was suppose to be absolutely awesome and it was pathetic.

I thought this was an article about games that had short playthroughs, not names, damnit!

Speaking of which, if you haven't played "You Have to Burn the Rope", do it NOW. It's extremely short but has an awesome song at the end.

That wasn't a very good song at the end of you have to burn the rope.

I think they mentioned it in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, although it might have been only in Japan...
