Pokemon Diamond / Pearl

Pokemon Diamond/Pearl Advanced Guide

You've mastered the Pokemon League, but there's still plenty of adventure to be found in Sinnoh

Words: Heidi Kemps, GamesRadar US

Still need more things to do in Sinnoh? Here’s a few places to check out.

THE RUIN MANIAC’S CAVE

You’ll find this guy digging his way through a cave on the western side of Route 214. He’s a big Unown fan, apparently. You can try bringing Unown to him, but nothing will happen. Instead, focus your efforts on the ruins in Solaceon. You can find 26 types of Unown here, each representing a different alphabet letter. Different Unown types appear in different rooms, so scour the place thoroughly. When you’ve got all 26, head back to where the guy was digging. You’ll find that he’s dug a passage into an entirely new section of the Solaceon Ruins! In the room at the end of this passage, the rare “!” and “?” Unown can be found. Catch them both for your full set of 28!

You can take the Unown you’ve got to a kid who lives in a house in Solaceon near the ruins. (You’ll need to hop off a few ledges to reach the place.) Show him any Unown by placing it at the front of your party. He’ll give you 10 stickers of the letter it represents that can be used to decorate Ball Capsules. Show him all 28, one by one, to get a full alphabet set.

RIBBON CENTER

Do you like Ribbons? Of course you do! They make you and your pokemon feel extra-special. And guess what? There’s a very special place for you, away from the Ribbon-less riffraff of society, where you can go and bask in your specialness.

The Ribbon Society is located in the Resort Area on the northeastern island. To get in, any one pokemon in your party needs to have earned at least 10 Ribbons.

Places where you can get Ribbons:

  1. Sunyshore will give a pokemon the Effort Ribbon if you have maxed out its Effort Values.
  2. Another lady in Sunyshore asks you to tell her stories every day. Visit her once a day to get a new Ribbon.
  3. Each Super Contest a pokemon wins in Hearthome gives it a Ribbon. (The same ribbon can’t be won twice, however.)
  4. If a pokemon’s happiness is at maximum level, you can visit the man who lives a bit east of Pastoria to get the Footprint Ribbon.
  5. After beating Cynthia, each pokemon in your party will get a special Ribbon.

Once you get 10 or more Ribbons for a certain pokemon, you can enter the Ribbon Society, where you can... uh... buy more Ribbons. Obscenely expensive ribbons. Ever wanted to pay 100,000 Pokedollars for something you can only see on the status screen? Well guess what, your prayers have been answered.

Well, it’s not a total wash. There’s a spa upstairs, which can boost a Pokemon’s happiness levels. Combine that with Veilstone’s masseuse and you’ll have some very pretty, pampered pokes.

EEVEE

Who doesn’t love this little guy? Eevee can be obtained in the Pokegarden on certain days, but the easiest way to get one is by visiting Bebe in Hearthome City after you get the National Dex. There are two new Eevee-volutions in Diamond/Pearl, Glaceon and Leafeon. To trigger these transformations, you’ll need to level up Eevee near certain magical rocks. Leafeon can be obtained by fighting near the rock to the northwest of the Eterna Forest entrance, while Glaceon’s rock is located in the northeastern part of the stormy path to Snowpoint City. Can’t decide what type of Eevee you want? You can evolve one and then breed it to help amass a full set of the little fox-things.

UNDERGROUND

There’s never been a better time to go spelunking! Not only are you more likely to find rare items while digging now, but several new fossils have started to appear. All of them can be revived at the Museum in Oreburgh. So what are you waiting for? Get out your chisel and let’s get paleontologic!

RETURN TO VICTORY ROAD

You may remember a section of Victory Road towards the exit of the Pokemon League that was blocked off by a guard. Well, the path’s clear now, so why not go exploring? The easiest way to get there is by flying to the Pokemon League, then heading back in through the exit. You’ll need many of your HMs here, so make sure you’ve got pokes that have learned these essential skills.

Once you enter, you’ll find yourself in a foggy cave leading to Route 224. You’ll also meet Marley, a taciturn girl who will back you up with her Arcanine, as well as heal your pokemon after battle. Sadly, her Arcanine is phenomenally useless, often preferring to use Helping Hand rather than worthwhile attacks. You’re better off putting a high-level poke in the lead and using items to reduce random encounters rather than having to endure more combat with her. Once you reach the exit, she’ll take off with nary a word. You’ll now be able to team up with her in the Battle Tower.

So now you’re at Route 224. There really isn’t all that much here save for items and a few other trainers, as well as more new wild pokemon. But perhaps there’s something that simply hasn’t been revealed to us yet...

BATTLE TOWER

Do you think you have the ultimate Pokemon? You won’t know until you’ve been to Battle Tower. Here is where the best of the best from around the world come to prove their prowess. Here you can engage in special single battles, double battles, or even multi battles where you can team up with CPU trainers you’ve met before. You can also team up with a pal using the DS’s wireless connectivity. There’s also a neat new option that lets you download the data of other players and their pokemon teams for battle via the Nintendo Wi-Fi connection.

Things to remember about the Battle Tower:

  1. Pokemon will be raised (or lowered) to Level 50 to ensure more evenly matched competitions. You’ll retain the same skills, but your poke’s stats will be temporarily altered.
  2. Many Legendaries will be unable to participate.
  3. Items cannot be used at any time in Battle Tower fights, save for held items.
  4. The AI in the Battle Tower is tough. These are easily the most difficult CPU battles in the game! Your opponents will work hard to set up disadvantageous situations for you and exploit your weaknesses to their fullest. Choose your combatants, skills, and hold items wisely!

Think you’re ready for this challenge? Go ahead, give it a shot, but be prepared for a struggle. Emerge victorious from here, and you’ll know that you’ve truly mastered Pokemon to its fullest.
