Last week, daily Japanese newspaper Sankei Shimbun (via Yahoo! Japan) reported that the Japanese Association of Psychiatric Hospitals has asked Gamecock Media Group's Japanese distributor Interchannel to pull DS game "Dementium: The Ward" from store shelves.

Released in Japan in June, "Dementium" is survival horror first-person shooter with a plot that has the protagonist in a dilapidated hospital filled with gruesome surgical experiments.

From the translated Yahoo! story, it seems that the organization was concerned that the game might "encourage discrimination and prejudice" against those with psychiatric disorders.

MTV Multiplayer contacted Gamecock CEO Mike Wilson about the association's request to yank the selling of "Dementium" in Japan. He said to MTV Multiplayer in an e-mail...
Some of the titles listed don’t yet have US release dates (The Last Guy, Ghostbusters, Fatal Frame), but we’re confident they’ll be hitting our shores sooner rather than later. And like any great horror game, the ones listed below require you to rely on your noggin (and a small ...

Made by three guys in a garage - each had over a decade of development experience - Renegade Kid signed with Gamecock in May of this year, and the game was gold by the end of October.

"The game technically releases tomorrow," Gamecock's Jason Livergood told the audience of developers, adding that this hadn't kept some retailers from releasing it a few days early. Not only have people started buying the game, they've started writing the publisher.
Shocking. That's the easiest way to describe Dementium: The Ward. We're equally taken aback by the technical feat that developer Kid Renegade and upstart publisher Gamecock have managed to pull off, and that there's a terrifying first-person survival horror game that elicits genuine scares on the Nintendo DS. If Metroid Prime Hunters proved the platform detractors wrong, then Dementium proves them infinitely ...
Like us, your first thought when pondering Dementium: The Ward probably is "Can a horror game on the DS be scary?" A while back we gave our initial impressions of the game, and recently we got some hands-on time with it. After wandering the halls of an asylum full of disturbing creatures, we can safely answer the question with "Yes, it's ...
There's a lot, a lot going against Dementium: The Ward. A new developer, Renegade Kid. A new publisher, Gamecock. An untested, mature genre on a mainstream, family-friendly handheld. Sounds like a recipe for gameplay that's more disturbing than its horror-hospital subject matter. But despite this three-pronged attack, the game seems like a genuinely interesting attempt at putting a Silent Hill-style adventure on the DS.

The premise is pretty basic - you wake up in a blood-stained asylum with ...
