Wayforward has a new composer on board. Contra 4 and Shantae composer Jake virt Kaufman has announced that he will be moving to California to join the developer's in-house staff, which likely means he'll be busy working on the upcoming Shantae games, much to the delight of fans. Aside from building a name for himself in the game remixing and chip tune communities, Kaufman has been working as a game audio composer for years, and this marks a huge step for him.

The relationship between games and movies has always been a tense one. There's something almost violently alchemical about the way the two media usually react to each other. It's like getting hit by a yellow, piss-soaked snowball. Either element can be unpleasant enough on its own, but put them both together and something far more horrible happens. Games of movies, movies of games, they're both usually about as much fun as the death of a clown at a ten year-old's birthday party. But still we

This week's top rental charts from U.S. game rental company GameFly, representing the most requested games for the week ending December 3rd, highlight both to-be-released and already released games in a unique demand-specific chart. This week's top five all-platform requests show little movement once again, after last week saw the list barely ruffled. Assassin's Creed still takes the top spot for a third week with Mass Effect in second for its second week in a row. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, which spent the last two weeks at number four, slips a bit to the fourth spot to make room for Kane and Lynch: Dead Men to move up one spot into the fourth spot, but that's the only movement -- Uncharted: Drake's Fortune stays at number five, where it entered last week.

Wayforward's Contra 4 is bringing back old school, Red Falcon ass-kicking action to the Nintendo DS and it looks like they're doing it next month. Marketing materials look to have made their way into the hands of one NeoGAF member, listing a launch date of November 13th and showcasing Contra 4's exceedingly masculine cover art.

How did a retro, old-school 2D platformer about guys named Lance Bean and Mad Dog become one of the most buzzed about games at E3 2007? Geek nostalgia is clearly a powerful force and Contra 4 knows exactly how to capture it. Check out the gameplay footage below and see for yourself. Miniature muscled men leaping up and down the flat screen, from perfectly horizontal platform to perfectly horizontal platform, shooting diagonally and literally ducking bullets as they go? That's the stuff

Pocket Gamer got some hands on time with the game during E3 and it seems clear that Contra 4 will succeed in doing the much loved series proud on the DS.
