Fortunately for Cars: Mater-National, the racing genre is shockingly devoid of quality entries on the Nintendo DS, aside from the brilliant (but two-year-old) Mario Kart DS and the recently released Race Driver: Create & Race, which makes this average racer seem more noteworthy than it otherwise would be. It cannot be compared (favorably) to the console versions, but it's the only iteration of Mater-National that improves upon its predecessor, and is not a bad option for race-loving tykes this holiday season.
