Dragon Age: Origins

Get ready for high fantasy at its finest

Words: Tyler Nagata on November 3, 2009

Dwarves. We already know what dwarves are. Dwarves are short, but strong. They make for good warriors and live underground. We already know all about dwarves, elves, mages, and dragons. So we thought we already knew all about everything Dragon Age: Origins could possibly throw at us while browsing through the unsurprisingly wide selection of beards for our upcoming dwarf warrior in the character creator. But after crafting one of the most generic dwarves of all time, the familiarity of Dragon Age’s typical fantasy setting quickly faded, and it quickly blossomed into one of the most engrossing role-playing games we’ve played in a long time.

dwarf
Pronunciation: \dworf\
Function: noun
History: From Modern English dwarf, and that time you read Tolkien, played Dungeons & Dragons, or did anything remotely geeky between the age of 12 and 37
Definition: 1 a: a mythical creature of small statue who dwells underground; excels at metallurgy, forging battleaxes, growing beards, and holding a mob’s agro

Above: A dwarf. You can totally play as one. Of course, there’s much more

This is high fantasy at its finest. So how does this title set itself apart from other RPGs that have done elves and dwarves to death? As with previous BioWare RPGs, like Mass Effect and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, it has to do with the game’s detailed lore, memorable characters, and an excellent combat system. But it’s the bounty of meaningful choices you have to make that really makes you feel like you own your story in Dragon Age - and it all begins when you create your first character.

Decisions, decisions, decisions

We rolled a dwarf warrior and opted to give him the background of a commoner. These seemingly superficial choices dropped us off in the slums of the dwarven capital city, Orzammar. As a low level commoner, we found ourselves doing dirty deeds for an underhanded crime lord just to survive. We exchanged harsh words with our alcoholic mother. We abandoned our poor sister. We lied. We stole. We murdered. And if we rerolled this character, we’d probably do it all again.

Above: Killing someone we didn’t have to. It was probably the right thing to do

That’s because Dragon Age doesn’t make you feel like a scumbag for acting less than chivalrous. For every problem there are several solutions, each with their own set of pros and cons - and deciding the best course of action is great fun. Had we chosen a different race and background, we would have experienced a completely different introduction to Dragon Age’s world. There are six origin stories in total, all unique and equally compelling.

I full on loved this game. I was a fan of the original KOTOR but I found this much better. And you guys wernt alone finding that fat blob boss monster hard. Only my main character survived to the end and that was only because he was a master with the sheild and I had given him the best and shiniest armour and weapons I could get my hands on, which was good quality stuff seeing as I did the dwarfs last out of the allies.

Just got this game and I'm liking it a lot. I also found it interesting that I happened to pick the same origin story that GR did (although I had that planned so it would better shape my character into what I wanted). The only thing I'm not fond of is when you chop an enemy's head off, but other than that, the characters, decisions, and combat are all a treat.

still think ME (and especially ME2) are better, but this is an amazing game that needs to be played (although not the choice for a newbie to the world of RPGs, very complex). Is it even possible for Bioware to make a bad game?

i work at a gamestop and i can take stuff home for a few days. i remember the previews and this looked great. i get home install and start playing to realize this is probably one of the worst rpg's i have ever played. it's almost a direct ripoff of world of warcraft! I think DemonSouls is much better of a title. This belongs in my burn pile.

if you are a true rpg fan then i do not recomend you buy this game JUST RENT IT!!!! the game it self is a disgrace to rpgs... dont trust these shooter fans that play COD every day... im not saying its not worth playing but the game turned out bad because bioware was rushed by microsoft

This is definitely one of the best games to come along since Hector was a pup but we warned that it is very buggy right now. I do have every confidence in Bio Ware's ability to get it cleaned up. So go ahead and buy it, play it, and enjoy. I'm having a GREAT time getting more frustrated than I have been since I don't remember when!!

You should do more reviews T-Nag!
I really want this. KOTOR and Neverwinter Nights are two of my favorite games, and games that I replayed 3 or more times, which is very rare for me.

Luckily I got a new computer this week, I think when I upgrade the graphics card I'll have to get this. (Assuming I don't put it off until right before Star Craft II comes out)

I want it, I really do but I'm tapped out from all the deals from last month! Plus I have MW2 preordered along with ME2 Collector's Edition. I really want it for my 360, since I can just barely run it on my pc, but gawd there is going to be so many mods. (Toolset was released today as well as a patch to make the game easier.)

I completely dismissed this game until my buddy told me about the $40 trade in credit deal at gamestop. I took a chance and got the game for $10 bucks after my trade ins. This game is effing incredible.

This is the deep experience Mass Effect should have been. My GOTY so far.

I am getting this game as soon as I can. The character body models aren't particularly impressive (on the humanoid models, particularly the females), but the hype seems to be well deserved in the gameplay department. I even downloaded a bunch of trailers on PSN just to see more of it.
    Get this game!

For some reason I was hoping that Dragon Age: Origins was going to be more of a hack and slash instead of what its is.

How long I have waited for a successor to Baldur's Gate.

All I need to do now is tell my boss I'm terminally ill but hope to recover some time around Christmas.

    Great review Tyler.

I'm sorry. Saying 'first' is like the One Ring... everyone hates it, but when it falls into your hand, you take advantage of it.

What an appropriate analogy, this being a fantasy RPG game.
