Dragon Age 2 romance guide

Sex in Dragon Age: Origins was a peculiar thing. For whatever reason, you’d spend hours upon hours striving to make the right dialogue choices, dumping random gifts into your companion’s inventory, murdering innocents - all to just quit in frustration and shamelessly head to YouTube where you could watch the ridiculously awkward (yet hilarious) VG sex that you couldn’t get. Well, Dragon Age 2 is finally here, and with it, a revamped romance system featuring a whole new set of companions to mash your pretty polygons against.

Interactions feel more sincere this time around (due in large part to your character actually being able to speak real words) and four of the five romanceable characters can be wooed by either a male or female Hawke. Unfortunately, it’s quite a task to juggle romance and your intentions for the direction of Kirkwall. Pursuing a character that opposes your worldview can add a challenging dynamic to the gameplay, but that’s why we’re here to help. And look on the bright side: you get to have sex on an indoor bed – a welcome change from those campfire-lit romps over grass patches and squirrel shit that were so famous in Origins.

Above: Dragon Age does the sex and violence thing pretty well…

There are three general rules to keep in mind if you want to fully romance a character (besides the obvious flirty dialogue choices) -

- Make every attempt to please them when speaking to other NPCs. Each companion has a different personality and set of beliefs, so make sure to consider that if your love interest is standing next to you during conversations.

-  Get them gifts. Each romanceable character has one specific gift tailored for them just waiting to be found during the second act. Isabela, Merrill, and Fenris have an additional gift that can be found during Act 3.

-  Complete their companion quests. Each character has at least one big quest per act that you must complete if you want to see this thing through to the end.

It is very important to note that “confirming” your romance with one companion at the Hawke estate AND asking them to move in during Act 2 is the point of no return. Once you’ve done this, you cannot effectively romance anyone else. You can still forge strong relationships with your remaining friends in preparation of the game’s final moments, but you won’t be getting the achievement/trophy that always comes with true love. And definitely restrain yourself from flirting with anyone other than the object of your affection, because believe it or not, some companions frown upon that sort of thing.

Note: Isabela, Merrill, Anders, and Fenris can be romanced regardless of your sex. The DLC character Sebastian, however, prefers women only.

Hey chicka bum-bum. I hear this game also has combat in it.

I'm not quite pleased with the romantic options in this game. Origin had better ones. I do miss Leliane a lot.

I like that there are more choices. Having almost your entire party to choose from is pretty cool. I went with the angry Fenris. As soon as I saw that clawed-glove attack I knew he was the one. All cheesiness aside, I really couldn't pick so I decided to just go down the list since I like seeing how the story unfolds for each companion.

    Bitch about bisexual elves now!

But i'm doing Anders now :( Oh well, i'll just have to wait.

one of my main complaints about the game. If i want to play a straight male i get to pick between a super slutty pirate, who carries porn with "Andraste" (Jesus of Feredlen) around and talks about it or a women who willingly dabbles with DEMONS! both are not my cup of two, and both top evilness or crudeness of any companion in DA: Origins. This is a HUGE fail on Biowares part, a character I romanced made the game feel more really, this time around I'm more likely to hate my companions if my character has any morals whatsoever. I'm really hoping future DLC or expansion or something will let me romance Aveline or some other char.

I gotta ask, see if this is a glitch or what, but I invited Anders to my home in Act 2 after the nightly trist and he isn't there. Do your companions actually show up there or...?

I sense Fox will soon unbuckle their metaphorical belt and take a huge shit on this game for the fact that it has sex - NAY! Implied eroticism is enough fodder for them to judge it!

So, i have a question. Do you HAVE to get both gifts for anyone you're trying to romance? i was going with Isabela first, but i realized only too late i missed the gift in Blackpowder Courtesy. If its possible, i could try to go back and pick it up, but i certainly would rather avoid replaying about 5 hours just to get an item. So, does she need both gifts, or should i keep chugging on?

Not getting the achievement for Romancing Sebastian is strange, but I've also noticed that none of the Achievements for Exiled Prince work yet, this might be a side effect of that bug.

I did two Merrill romances, one as Friend and one as Rival. Rival was much more believable and fulfilling (although the sex scene is unchanged except for the conversation). My rogue absolutely disapproved of everything Merrill did that had to do with blood magic, but was nice to her otherwise. Merrill finally comes to realize what she's doing is wrong and Hawke can choose to romance her.

I actually had 2 romance scenes one with Isabella and one with Merrill but only Merrill got cool armor and not Isabella.

do you ALWAYS have to be sarcastic to get Isabella? or are there no other dialouge paths you can take?
  • IzAnAgI - June 21, 2011 7:53 a.m.

also do you HAVE to get 100% to get the quest?
  • nachtmusik - January 21, 2012 3:24 p.m.

...Man, it's such a shame, Isabela doesn't threaten you at all if you've slept with both her and Merrill but are romancing Merrill if your Hawke is a girl. This game gets so much love from me for allowing m/m and f/f romances, seriously.

Okay, this is FABULOUS.... but does all this go for Rivalry Romance as well??

*For Fenris Sorry forgot to pop that in.
