Don’t expect the next Wii to be in 3D

Nintendo says 3D TVs too niche, too expensive

Words: on July 16, 2010

If you’ve ever wanted to watch DVD movies on your Wii, play Super Mario Galaxy 2 in high definition, or chat with your friends while playing Mario Kart online, you probably could have guessed what we're about to say: Don't set your hopes too high if you have any interest in playing a 3D Nintendo game on your TV. The new stereoscopic 3D TV medium is the latest standard in video game technology that Nintendo is choosing to overlook.

That is, at least, according to Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto. In an interview with German video game site Spiegel Online (translated through Google Translator), Miyamoto said, “It will take some time before enough households have 3-D TVs” to make a 3D game system relevant.

That is, of course, pretty much the exact same thing that Nintendo said about HDTVs when it first planned the Wii, and now you can’t find a single game on the Xbox 360 or PS3 that isn’t presented in true HD. Meanwhile, there has not been a single Nintendo game in high definition (sorry - 480p isn't considered HD these days) because the Wii won’t support it.

Above: You're not seeing this in HD. In fact, it's possible you never will.

The same thing happened with online connectivity. While the PS2 and original Xbox were pioneering online gaming, Nintendo sat back and watched. Even today, its online functionality is kind of a joke. With rare exceptions, no one who owns a Wii or DS even knows what their online ID is (because, you know, it’s a 16-digit number instead of a username like everyone else). It also took Nintendo a ridiculously long time to finally have a console that used full-size DVD discs (or discs at all - right N64?), and the Wii’s hard drive is 1/448 the size of the lowest-capacity PS3.

When it comes to 3D, at least Nintendo shows that it is at least somewhat in tune to what’s going on in the world. The 3DS will provide the only portable 3D gaming experience, but it runs on its own proprietary format and not an industry standard. We have to wonder if Nintendo can continue to thrive if it will always shun the latest technology and go its own way. Taking risks is most always a good thing - how many Wiis have been sold thanks to that motion controller? - but isn’t it at least worthwhile to pretend to accept what every other electronics company is doing?

Ouch, this article just bitch slapped Nintendo. I don't see the big deal with 3D TVs. And if Nintendo learns from any of the mistakes it made with the Wii, its next console will probably be able to adapt to being able to turn 3D on and off with firmware updates, like the PS3.

I call bullshit. They got away with making an SD console back when HDTV's were still collecting dust on Best Buy shelves, and the majority of people were rocking a 200-pound CRT. Nowadays HDTV's, HDTV programming and the HD consoles are much, much more prevalent. People have gotten used to the limitations of the Wii, and they've gotten used to it. They will be much less forgiving when they see that the new Wii2 looks as shitty as their first Wii. That shit just won't fly. There are some things that are uncertain - LCD/Plasma/OLED, different battery technologies, etc etc etc. However, "HD is the future" is an absolute given, and Nintendo simply can't plug their ears and say that they don't hear it.

the 5th time you will see a 3D movie or play a 3D game, you will get sick of it. The biggest problem is the glasses. Its too tiresome and annoying.

Eventually, the technology will allow this without glasses (with the 3DS showing the way) but it will take a while until everyone have a glass-less 3D TV. Until then, it would be best not to act as if the 3D is "standard"... Its an overpriced gimmick right now.

Heck, how many people who bought HDTVs the last 2 or 3 years are going to "throw them away" in order to buy new and more expensive 3D TVs?

Thank God. 3D is quickly becoming the next in the long line of gimmicks ahead of us all.

I'm really freaking tired of 3D and motion controls. They're not bad in moderation, but when EVERYBODY wants to do it, it drives cookoo for cocoa Puffs!

But the thing with 3D gaming is that in the next console genereration (if the console's hardware is fast enough) they can just do what Sony did and give the console a firmware update so that people can have the option to play it in 3D if they have a 3D TV or just turn the 3D off if they don't feel like wearing the glasses or something. But I do believe that the next nintendo console will be in full HD and will have other multimedia capabilities other than games

Umm...so? Mario Galaxy HD/3D would add little more to the experience than standard definition.

reCAPTCHA: "obstruct the" articles about possibility/impossibility of Wii HD/3D as many don't really care. If it happens so be it.

Nintendo could make a console that can play both so when 3D TVs are in wider circulation then they can start making 3D games, but its not like Nintendo neglecting HD actually hurt them.
