DICE responds: Taliban soldiers playable in Medal of Honor

Speaking to PSM3 magazine, Medal of Honor producer Patrick Liu responded to the controversy over the ability to play against Americans as Taliban soldiers in multiplayer for the upcoming Medal of Honor game.

“I think it is a fair point. We do stir up some feelings, although it’s not about the war, it’s about the soldiers,” explained Liu. Set during the 2001 War in Afghanistan, the singleplayer campaign will follow several Tier One Operators working for the US military. But Liu doesn’t think that the new Medal of Honor title will be too provocative. “We can’t get away from what the setting is and who the factions are but, in the end, it’s a game, so we’re not pushing or provoking too hard.”

So terrorists have to be white now too? If that happens then wont groups be complaining about their being no diversity in videogames? Then developers will have to make the "good guys" mid-eastern/afghani/asian/indian/native/african/latin and the terrorists will be white.... hey wait a minute...

Lol people are stupid... you can play as Nazi's on CoD... if you ask me thats worse than Taliban

If the same content pops up in a movie, it's no big deal, but if it's in a video game, news is all over it with headlines like: "Sex Simulator" or "Game Trains Children to Become Terrorists". I suppose one could argue that since you're controlling a video game, its psychological effects are greater than a movie, but... come on, most mature people can handle it.

instead of No Russian, it's No Taliban

And what i meant was in any other videogame on the face of the earth...does anyone give a crap that you can kill Americans as the Russians in CoD4? Or as the Germans in CoD2, 3, and 5?
  • Cwf2008 - August 10, 2010 1:44 a.m.

Love GR, but this is pretty irresponsible journalism when you don't devote to a single keystroke to what any of the actual controversy IS. Who is protesting?

    "TERRORISTS WIN"

It's a SOLIDER..a simple little character. It's only causing controversy cause we are fighting the Taliban right now. To the people who speak out against this game, I ask you, Did you speak out against CoD4 when we were killing Russians? No you didn't, so it's ok to be Americans killing Russians who are fighting for their nation, but it's not ok to kill American soldiers??? the correct answer is it does not matter because it is a game and the people you play as are made on a computer..

"but, in the end, it’s a game, so we’re not pushing or provoking too hard." It seems like an innocent enough statement, but where are the balls? This mentality is exactly what keeps games from transcending into a universally accepted medium. Can you imagine if one of the producers of a movie like "Saving Private Ryan" or "The Hurt Locker" said, "In the end, it's just a movie, so we're not pushing or provoking too much."? When this attitude is kept up, Fox and pals are going to continue pushing our culture around.

Why does the media get in a hissy fit everytime a game has terrorists in it. Movies have been doing it for years and there hasn't been any complaining about it. I don't mind the Taliban being a playable faction I mean what would the multiplayer be otherwise: Team Jacob vs. Team Edward?
  • Felixthecat - August 10, 2010 midnight

Every war is stupid and pointless anyway, there's no need for it. And the Taliban are still people, plus it doesn't look like they're exactly going to be represented in MoH as the new master race. They get shot in the game as well, you know. I highly doubt that Afghanistan based news stations are going to cover this.
  • sklorbit - August 9, 2010 11:47 p.m.

americans get killed in all types of games who cares? in WWII games, the nazis win sumtimes! not a big deal, but it will be covered on the news

  • shadowreaper72 - August 9, 2010 11:24 p.m.

Im am sick and tired of these dumbasses complaing bout stuff in games when the same content they see in games are in movies as well. Geez SHUT THE FUCK UP U PUSSY ASS CRYBABYS!!!
  • wud03 - August 9, 2010 11:16 p.m.

So the facts are: 1. We've known this would be based on the conflict in Afghanistan for a while now. 2. We've known there will be a multiplayer faction. So what did everyone think the factions would be? Soviet and the mujahadeen? (Fun fact: mujahadeen was on our side, at least back in the day) As a veteran, I don't see why there's outrage over something this obvious.
