DICE: 'Other shooters are treading water' compared to Battlefield 3

Now that the Battlefield 3 hype tank is all greased up and prepped for combat, DICE is making its first offensive maneuvers. Alongside today's pre-order bonus announcement and the release of the first gameplay footage, which debuted the dev's impressive new iteration of the Frostbite engine, came a few choice quotes from senior members of DICE.

"We are gearing up for a fight and we%26rsquo;re here to win," said General Manager Karl Magnus Troedsson. "Where other shooters are treading water Battlefield 3 innovates. Frostbite 2 is a game-changer for shooter fans. We call it a next-generation engine for current-generation platforms."

"We wanted to create the most immersive and emotionally powerful Battlefield game ever and we needed new technology to deliver on our vision," added Executive Producer Patrick Bach. "Battlefield 3 preserves the franchise%26rsquo;s signature sandbox style and even brings back classic fan favourites like jets, going prone and 64-player multiplayer on PC."

We're looking forward to the colossal battles that'll ensue within Battlefield 3, but we're also anticipating what may be the climax of the war-genre battle between Activision and EA, which has been crescendoing more rapidly sincethe Infinity Ward debacle.

Activision is banking heavily on the continued success of Call of Duty, and the series keeps delivering - the last four games, beginning with Modern Warfare, have been madly successful. It surely expects the same from Modern Warfare 3.

EA, meanwhile, has continued to achieve success with the Battlefield series - if not CoD levels of success - and brought back the Medal of Honor franchise last year with results strong enough to warrant a sequel. If Battlefield 3 is as badass as it looks, Medal of Honor gets the improvements it needs, and Respawn Entertainment - the studio created by former-Infinity Ward members, which sports a publishing deal with EA - delivers something soon, the Call of Duty series' untouchable status may be breached with a vengeance.

Alright, alright, that's enough Battlefield 3 news for now, but don't expect EA and DICE to stay quiet for long. The hype tank is rolling, and it'll almost definitely roll through GDC, PAX, and E3 as we approach the game's fall 2011 release window. It should be fun to watch.
