Destiny and Mystique

Destiny – the aged seer – and Mystique – the blue-skinned shapeshifter – were another pair of lovers who had to hide their true relationship from the delicate eyes of young readers for many years because of Marvel’s “no gays” policy. But X-Men writer Chris Cleremont always thought of them as a couple, and even mooted the idea that they should be Nightcrawler’s parents (Mystique having shapeshifted into a man at the time). In one issue, the Shadow King refers to Destiny as Mystique's "leman," which is an archaic term for "lover" which presumably went over the heads of Marvel censors (and 99.9% of the readers), but finally in 2001 in X-Men Forever #5 it was made explicit that they were lovers.
