David Benioff writing Kurt Cobain drama

Universal has hired David Benioff to pen a drama – that has yet to find a title – about the life (and tragic death) of Nirvana lead singer Kurt Cobain.

The singer’s life has always been something of a cultural touchstone: Gus Van Sant forged his Last Days movie around a performer much like Cobain. Universal has nabbed the rights to Charles Cross’ biography Heavier Than Heaven that Benioff will adapt into a movie.

Cobain’s life story encompasses the formation of Nirvana in 1987 and the birth of the Seattle grunge movement in the early ‘90s. But the singer himself constantly battled depression, eventually losing the fight and committing suicide in 1994.

The new movie should hopefully be able to use all of Nirvana’s music, since rights holder, not to mention Cobain’s widow, Courtney Love, has been given an executive producer credit.
