Meet Abby, happily-married lesbian mum. Now meet Eleanor, the escort alter-ego Abby invents after a knock to the head.
It sounds satirical or salacious, but writer/director Stacie Passon’s debut is no exploitation pic, but a sensitive meditation of female desire. Robin Weigert gives an affecting performance, caught halfway between liberation and embarrassment.
Yet the film’s cryptic style obscures insight; just as the condition provides a scapegoat for neglecting Abby’s motives, so it prevents Passon from developing a sustained dramatic network. Satisfaction is fleeting.
