Cobie Smulders officially hooks role in The Avengers

Over the weekend, rumours surfaced that How I Met Your Mother star Cobie Smulders was in talks to join Joss Whedon’s The Avengers in a high profile role.

Today comes news that Smulders has all but got the part, with just the paperwork and a handshake to be getting along with.

She will step into the shoes of S.H.I.E.L.D. executive director Maria Hill in Whedon’s ambitious comic adap, which means she’ll be working closely with Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury.

But the good news doesn’t end there. Smulders won’t only be signing on for The Avengers - she’s also being contracted for up to nine Marvel films, in a deal that echoes Jackson’s own deal with Marvel.

Sounds like Marvel aren’t planning on going anywhere soon – The Avengers looks to be only the beginning for their designs to take over the comic book movie world.

The Avengers opens 4 May, 2012.
