Castlevania: Lords of Shadow super review

Can a fresh approach help this series rise from its grave?

Words: Matthew Keast on September 28, 2010

We were just having a conversation about reboots the other day, and how it’s possible that Joel Schumacher is single-handedly responsible for the reboot phenomenon that has taken hold of both Hollywood and the games industry. It started with Schumacher making Batman “more colorful” with Batman Forever and Batman and Robin – leading to Batman Begins, the success of which led to Casino Royale, and trickling down to a million other film reboots. Videogames, always wanting to be interactive movies, jumped on the bandwagon. And now we have Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. Is it a reboot? Yeah, we think so.

Did Castlevania need a reboot? Surely it has done the whole “go after Dracula in his huge castle for the millionth time” thing to death. But the series hasn’t exactly done the Batman and Robin, has it? Its forays into 3D gameplay haven’t set the world on fire (via flame whip, of course), but they didn’t really jump the shark, did they? It does feel, though, that the ol’ ‘vania could do with some freshening of its almost odiously familiar undead corpse.

Above: Get ready, because this shit is about to get real... epic

Lords of Shadow does feel fresh for a Castlevania game, but much of it will be familiar to anyone who’s played God of War, Bayonetta, Tomb Raider, and/or Uncharted. Oh, and Shadow of the Colossus. If ever a game could fit the term pastiche, LoS jumps in and wears it like a glove. It does bring some new ideas to the table, and it does everything – from the graphical details, to the music, to the ludicrously epic boss fights – with passion and finesse. One bandwagon it hasn’t jumped on is the trend for games to be easy these days.

Castlevania was always hardcore

We’re reminded of Demon’s Souls when playing LoS – but wait, don’t worry, it’s not that difficult. It’s not an easy game, but like Demon’s Souls, its difficulty is always fair. It punishes sloppiness and greed, which importantly distinguishes it from God of War by having a different pace to the combat. Gabriel Belmont, the star of the monster-slaughtering show, has an arsenal of fancy combos, but good luck pulling them off. We’re sure super hardcore gamers will find a way to bust out the ten-hit flurries, but we were too busy dodging. LoS divides its combat into several beautiful, optional playstyles. We were a stick-and-mover, lashing out a couple of quick jabs with the combat cross (Gabriel’s version of the whip), rolling away from danger, and repeating. We did so many somersaults through the game’s 15-20 hour play time (yes, it’s epic) that Gabriel must have needed the world’s best chiropractor by the end.

Above: This boss was so difficult and long we were sure he was the last boss. Nope - try the first of three mega bosses, and this isn't counting all the "normal" bosses and the skyscraper-sized titans

We didn’t have time to be escalating God of War-style combos because enemies are fast, aggressive, agile, and they do atrocious amounts of damage. Get too greedy with your button mashing and say night-night. However, the other style of fighting that we didn’t get any good at until very late in the game is block-centric instead of dodge-centric. Time a block perfectly and Gabriel can counter-attack. The wonderful thing is that you can pretty much interrupt one of your combos at any time to block, so if you’re good, you can really lash away at an enemy continuously, punctuating your assault with blocks. Getting good at LoS’s combat is a satisfying, if daunting endeavor. You’ll feel like a goddamn vampire hunting king once you figure out your groove (or knock the difficulty down to easy, although we don’t recommend it if you want a truly satisfying experience).

Is it even Castlevania?

Despite borrowing so many gameplay ideas from other games, LoS feels like its own thing. Something about its internal logic, its visual and aural aesthetic, and its bizarre story make for an experience that is cohesive and stands on its own two feet, instead of just being a Frankenstein monster of pasted-together disparate parts.  Weirdly enough, this also means that most of the time, for us, it doesn’t feel like a Castlevania game. Sure, Gabriel is a Belmont, he fights with a “whip” and he fights gothic monsters like werewolves and vampires in gothic settings like dark forests and flying-buttress-adorned castles, but on the other hand, he tromps through sparkly sun-soaked glades and fights trolls along dusty mountain tops, and never once mentions going after series figurehead, Dracula.

Above: There sure are vampires, though. We enjoyed their demonic, batlike makeover

Ardent fans of the Castlevania series will have a range of reactions to LoS. Some will gobble it up and say, “Yes, this feels like Castlevania,” while others will scratch their heads and say, “Where the hell is the castle and where the hell is my cross-shaped boomerang?” For us, we had so much fun along the way, we only occasionally muttered, “Oh yeah, isn’t this supposed to be Castlevania? Why doesn’t it feel like it?” And yet, there were moments of, “Oh yeah, now THAT’S some freakin’ Castlevania!”

Gamers especially bewildered by the first few hours of LoS should be aware that part of the confusion is intentional. The game wants the player to ask “So how does this fit into the canon?” It does answer that question, but we won’t spoil it here. Whether that answer will satisfy fans will have to wait until after the game releases.

I don't know, HT. Did you play the full game or are you basing this on a demo. They have an incredible bestiary in this game. Fantastic enemy design. And out if the 20+ boss battles, yes, 3 of them were SotC inspired. I'd say it was more of an homage than a direct rip-off, tho. Especially the if you factor in the Titan Graveyard towards the end of the game. The combat is similar to GoW in the whip, but the combos are way different, especially when you add in the relics with different combinations of light and dark magic.

I like how you say ruins are Uncharted ripoffs when Tomb Raider did ruins way before there was an Uncharted and Castlevania did gothic inspired ruins before both on the NES.

And if I were to nitpick on Uncharted(you seem to be a fan), I could say they borrowed a bunch from Tomb Raider Underworld. Uncharted:DF didn't have hand over hand climbing but TRU did. Then it was added in Uncharted 2. Climbing up a vertical destroyed vehicle. U2 had a train; TRU had a capsizing oil tanker. U3 has a burning chataeu; TRU has you escaping from a burning mansion.

Heck, I could even go into similarities between Rygar: The Legendary Adventure (2002) and God of War(2004). Rygar had a spiked shield(Hades) on a chain that you could whip horizontallly and vertically. Sound familiar? Magic powers bestowed upon you by Greek Gods. Sound familiar?

Anyway, I can't really take anything from Uncharted or GoW. They are fantastic, but so is Castlevania. From the fantastic puzzles(Vampire Wargame? Come on, tell me that wasn't an awesome idea)) to the great boss battles, it's most assuredly deserving of the score of 9 it received from this or any site or magazine.

    Whaaaat?
Ugh, hold on, let me just try to get over the fact this piece of crap got a 9.
    Nope, still not over it.

The combat system is not similar, it's IDENTICAL to GoW's, even the combat moves.I seriously had some trouble finding anything new in it, from the controls to the combo system.
There are no original weapons whatsoever.
    Whipsword?GoW.
    Evil Gauntlet?Devil May Cry 4.
    Throwing daggers?Devil May Cry 3.
You might tell me that CV had those in the old games as well, but that doesn't mean that the devs couldn't effing use their brains to make something even slightly new, or at least that PLAYS in a new way.
I was literally offended by how unoriginal this game was, from the boring, predictable Uncharted wannabe ruins and GoW whip-climbing to the even more boring Soul Calibur-esque arenas, to the -surprise!- incredibly dull and repetitive fights and QTE's that basically require you to roll around and hit, then repeat.
Do you like to block?Just mash the block button and you'll automatically counter most attacks until you get an opportunity to land a strike.
Hardly "tactical" combat if you ask me.DMC nails the "hard but fair" factor much much better than this one.
And making the game "hard" by making enemies deal monstrous damage is just a cheap tactic to extend playtime.
And I'm not even going to start with how similar to Shadow of the Colossus some boss battles are.
There's a fine line between borrowing and stealing.
I love games that can borrow properly, but hate games that have no creativity.
Uncharted games borrowed some elements from Tomb Raider games, but they had a life of their own.
This one does not.It really, really, really doesn't.
It doesn't just take but change some things to make them interesting..it just TAKES them without changing a thing.
You know that a game is bad when you and your friend are having a contest about who can spot which game did they steal featues from first, which was by the way the only fun I had while playing this garbage.

currently in chapter 2 and so far it's pretty meh. combat tries to be GoW but unbalanced punishing at times reduce the actual useful moveset to bare minimum. GoW satisfies me with frenzied combat, Bayonetta satisfies me with skilled combat, LoS doesnt satisfy me on both spectrum. The best 3D castlevania is still Lament of Innocence. But if I was proven wrong towards the end of the game, I'd be a happy man. If anything this game re-ignites my sentiment to Kojima; he just got THAT many reviewers in his bandwagon almost as if Kojima involvement == +10 metacritic score more than it should be.

Finally, a fair review of LoS! After IGN's fucking debacle of a review, this is a pleasantly refreshing take. Probably the only point I'll disagree with you on is that I WOULD call this game as being better than GoW 3. I have played both games extensively now, and I love both. GoW 3 i beat on chaos mode, so I REALLY got into that game. LoS is just more fun, pure and simple. From the more satisfying combos to the sound the combat cross makes when you attack, all the details just seem to work better for me in LoS. Still, awesome review!

great game, loved every minute of it, but fighting the last titan(if your near the end then you'll understand) was very annoying, also the game went so quickly. finished it in a weekend(yes I have a life and didn't play it for 20 hours non stop- the reason for this is that the game wasn't 20 hours like most reviews say, I completed it in 10 hours over the course of 4-5 days, but the ending is so epic, and the epilogue is weird, very, very weird

This looks absolutely superb. i'ma pick this up the day it comes out, i prefer the combat in this game (based on the demo) then god of war, it seems to be more deeper then god of war, but that's only based on the demo. plus I think id rather bash vampires and werewolves to a pulp. Greek mythology creatures have had there place, move over kratos your hack and slash is over and will be remembered but for me there's a new kid on the block. I hope this series evolves so that at least the next game will have some connection to previous castlevania games :S

After playing the demo and reading what i have here, this game has just went into the must buy category.

Considering this list only had Cataclysm and Hot Pursuit on it says a lot about the quality i think it will show in the full game :)

If you have not yet tried the demo people check it out and it has Captain Picard in it!!
