One of the legends of the Golden Age of Comics, writer, artist and editor, Joe Simon died at the age of 98 on Wednesday, his son has revealed on Facebook. He will be best remembered for co-creating Captain America with Jack Kirby.

Captain America first appeared in March 1941, in his own title published by Timely Comics, the company which would evolve into Marvel, and where Simon served as editor. The first issue, featuring Captain America hitting Hitler on the cover, hit the newsstands just a few months before the Pearl Harbor attack and America’s entry into World War II. The character was an instant hit – the first issue selling nearly a million copies.
