Box art for Destiny revealed

Bungie's first game in the post-Halo era is getting startlingly close to being an actual video game instead of a romantic ideal about online cooperative shooting. Destiny still doesn't have a firmer release date than 2014, but it does have this newly released box art.

The cover shows Destiny's three Guardian classes--titan, hunter, and warlock--all looking around for the photographers who are supposed to take their picture for the cover. Ooh, looks like the warlock's spotted 'em!

What do you think of Destiny's box design? Would you have preferred a different Traveler-to-Guardian ratio? And if you prefer your pictures in motion, a new gameplay trailer is inbound tomorrow.

Chances are the limited edition version of the game will come with a cooler box art design so there's that. I think the cover would look way cooler without the three guys in it but I understand the marketing reasons as for why they did it (see Ken Levine talk about why Bioshock Infinite's cover was so generic for one reason) and they're trying to show the message that it's a shooter with a co-op emphasis.

I believe it was Ken Levine who discussed the topic of why covers for games look so generic. He said that the people who are going to buy the game are still going to buy the game despite what the cover looks like. However casual players need to be grabbed by the cover and the average person won't be grabbed by an orb floating over a planet they'll be grabbed by "a space guy with a gun". Do I like the cover? It's alright but I hardly even pay attention to the covers of my games and it will likely have a reversible cover with that image of the moon.

confused. The guy in front has his head facing us but his body facing away? They can't be serious with this. When I saw it I thought it was fake, now people are saying its legit? Could have been a million times better.

Yeah, plus if that's the back of the hunter's helmet, I find it super creeper how close it looks to a Spartan's Mjolnir armor.

Eh it's kinda bland. Not sure why so many box arts feel they have to do a close up shot, even when they are trying to hide their faces. I would've preferred something a little more zoomed out with the three persons on route to some destination with the moon still in the backround. Also, is that a baguette he's holding in his left hand?

no, he's just happy to see you.

I personally find the box art bland, it doesn't tell me much about the product or what it contains. If it was mistitled as Dune it would likely fool someone.

Dunno if it's just me, but the semicircular object at the top just looks like someone gave up on a scratchcard half way through.

Makes me think they wanted to make a metallic foil.

I hope there's more to this later on, but you never know what's going on.

relatively tasteful take on the same formula. evokes "sci-fi" more than "badass".

Personally I don't like how faded the colors are. If someone were to judge a game by its cover the dull colors wouldn't attract much attention. Also for some reason I feel like there should be some more blue. The sky doesn't seem to do enough.

This is all 3 of the most popular box art covers on one cover. -Guy turned away from you, looking away, with gun in hand -Guy facing you, looking away, gun in hand -Guy with some of his back facing you, looking away, pointing gun at the distance.

A bit generic, but I kinda like it. At least its not "HOO RAH BLAM BLAM" or anything.
