Blancanieves review

Though Biancanieves probably only exists because of The Artist, it doesn’t share much DNA with Michel Hazanavicius’ Oscar winner beyond its silent, monochromic skin.

A Spanish retelling of Snow White , this second feature from Pablo Berger relocates Grimm’s fairy tale to the 1920s and refashions its heroine as a bullfighter.

It’s a sumptuously told tale, shot with painterly visuals and edited with a cool, melodic rhythm.

Low on title cards, it’s a speechless movie that really does tell its story through images and music, thanks as well to Alfonso De Vilallonga’s full-throated score.
