Pre-orders for Treyarch’s Call of Duty: Black Ops are currently ahead of pre-orders for Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, says Pacific Crest Securities analyst Evan Wilson. But even though Black Ops is ahead of its predecessor in terms of pre-orders, Wilson doesn’t believe that Black Ops will match Modern Warfare 2’s total sales of 16 million copies in 2009.

Citing Pacific Crest Securities’ retail sources, “competition, weaker marketing, and the Infinity Ward situation,” Wilson estimates that Black Ops will end up selling about 12 million copies. If Wilson is correct, this will be the first time that a new Call of Duty title doesn’t sell as many copies as one of its predecessors.
Call of Duty: Black Ops is scheduled to release on Nov 9, 2010.
