Black Knight Sword is the side-scrolling, pop-up theatre, adult fairytale you've been waiting for

Gamescom has been firing out new screenshots and trailers like a malfunctioning asset cannon over the last couple of days. But actual new game announcements? Not so much. So thank you Black Knight Sword for being a new game and being announced at Gamescom. It's a side-scrolling adventure game with a unique pop-up puppet theatre kind of aesthetic. Check out the video below for the full Gamescom reveal. For anyone with an impatient disposition, actual game footage starts around the 2:30 mark.

So then. Black Knight Sword is the kind of anarchic jumbled up grab-bag of influences that we've come to expect from Shadows of the Damned developer Grasshopper Manufacture (who is jointly developing this with the not-so-well known Digital Reality). Visually it echoes Paper Mario, but with an inexplicable blend of Medieval European architecture, domestic cooking appliances and bizarre Japanese demons. And less Goombas.

Don't know about you, but I can't wait to find out what other madness Black Knight Sword has tucked up its papery sleeves.

This looks cool. The pop-up theater style segments of Shadows of the Damned were my least favorite part of the game (actually, I hated them) but I think they've got the right idea this time around. Sidescrolling hack 'n' slashing beats cumbersome shooter segments any day.

I like that at around the 2:00 mark, the camera zooms-in on the translator and girl with the skirt and video camera. "What game?" The game looks great so far. For more paper-puppet madness, check out "Dante's Inferno" in Netflix streaming.

I want to buy the translator and her tight pants a drink.

I like what I see so far.

This looks pretty cool, and I do love me some Grasshopper Manufacture. Sign me up

I was just about to mention I was reminded of those weird puppet chases in SotD when I saw Shinji was behind this too :P. Looks kind of fun, I wonder if any kind of multiplayer will be in it.

Think this might be the first game that would look REALLY good in 3-D. Hope this isn't just a download-only title.

It worked well for the Paper Mario series

    That's certainly an art style...
