BioShock Infinite video shows Elizabeth's creation

In the days of Rapture, BioShock was just you and the unfriendly world (and some jerk on a radio). But when Irrational Games started cracking on BioShock Infinite, the studio wanted a friendly link between the player and the environment; making Elizabeth not just useful for moving the story along but helpful and reactive to each individual player was quite an undertaking.

Elizabeth's voice actress, motion capture performer, and designers have a lot to say about making the "Lamb of Columbia" a memorable character. Thankfully, you'll finally get to meet her yourself when BioShock Infinite releases next Tuesday.

This was really really cool, however I can't help but think that this only reinforces the fact that people tend to think of women locally as opposed to globally... that is, as a bunch of disparate parts rather than a whole, singular person or concept. Still, they have the right idea in mind, and even despite having to create all these facets of Elizabeth separately it looks (even at this point, not having played the game yet) like she's shaping up to be a truly astounding character that we will relate to as a person and character, as opposed to a bundle of voicework, motion capture and animation masquerading as a human character. Just looking at the way she behaves in-game in brief shots in these vignettes or gameplay showcases, you really aren't (or at least I'm not) getting any uncomfortable, uncanny valley vibes whatsoever... which is really, really awesome. If anything, we already know such a character can be done, even if it's a female character... we have plenty of proof of this in Alyx Vance. Technically, Alyx seems quite crude in comparison to what's on display here, but even if so many years ago a character as relatable and affecting as her was possible, I'm very excited to see just how much better Levine's team can do now with Elizabeth. And it's only like... ZOMG!!! FIVE DAYS!!!!!!!!11!!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

I enjoy watching these videos, I like knowing more about the work that goes into the game and realizing that there isn't just coding going on. I find it very interesting that for Elizabeth they really seem to have put so much effort into her character, from having one person handing the voice, other the motion capture, and even another one handling the face and expressions. It makes me hope that I will genuinely feel different when interacting with that character than what I0ve experienced with other games so far. So here's hoping!
