The first level of Rearmed unfolds just like the NES game. You begin by parachuting onto the outskirts of an enemy base, then work your way past rocket-launching thugs, eventually into an elevator. Once inside, you dive deep into the facility and - in a departure from the original - face a huge hovering tank boss. We fired several bullets and used the bionic arm to hurl barrels at it to no avail. What to do against this armored foe?
At 1:33 you'll see the boss's top open up. In co-op, that opening alternates between top and bottom, so you have to split up and distract it while the other guy hurls tosses the barrels into the exposed circuitry. This is what old-school is all about - hardcore co-op against seemingly impossible enemies. Only through intense teamwork will you see the end, and Bionic Commando Rearmed, based on our hands-on, feels like it'll deliver all those promises of yesteryear.
And in case you were born after Reagan was in the White House, or haven't really dabbled in NES games too much, Rearmed is still fully fit for duty. Its tough-as-hell design and one-of-a-kind swinging mechanic made the original so beloved that people still praise it today. There's no reason to think the same won't be true of Rearmed when it arrives in late spring.
