I'm disappointed. The list may just only have platformers, but how could you just ignore all the RPG entries like Paper Mario:TTYD, Super Mario RPG, and the Mario and Luigi saga games?

I know it's not a proper Mario game, but Yoshi's Island belongs at or near the top. Nintendo decisively answered the question of how to make a platformer with an invincible player character interesting and fun, and you can count the number of platformers who attempted to do so since on one hand (Braid and Super Meat Boy, I love you!!!). The colorful "children's coloring book" art style also sets the game apart from the 90's raditude and early glimmers of "maturity" that were standard at the time, and like all games that choose great art over technical gimmicks, it still holds up well to this day. It didn't hurt that the Super FX2 chip gave the game plenty of technical gimmicks of its own, allowing for bigger and more unique bosses and enemies. And the music! Oh God, the music! It was SO hummable and good! I bought the NP player's guide and played to 100% completion, then dug it out and happily did it again for the GBA rerelease years later. One of my all-time favorite games.

He's a troll or an attention whore, whichever you prefer to call him. He posts an idiotic comment that lacks intelligence on just about every article. He's been doing it for a little while now. Just ignore him.

I couldn't agree more with this list. Mario 3 is an amazing title, and to this day I still consider it my favorite game of all time. Great list guys.

Super Mario Galaxy is far better than 2. The first 60 stars of Galaxy 2 are nothing but an extended tutorial, and from there on it's just a slog through secret stars (10 stars to proceed to the next galaxy? terrible pacing) until you finally reach 120 stars and can get to the green stars. Super Mario 3D Land took the series back in the right direction. And I think the RPG games should have their own list. People never really talk about which ones are best, aside from occasional proclaiming Super Mario RPG the best or talking about how lacking Partners in Time was.
  • shawksta - August 14, 2012 4:32 p.m.

Galaxy 2 had something new everytime, which you call "extended tutorial" Galaxy has it's perks of Rosalinas ship and the first time experience, Galaxy 2 trumps it in gameplay and almost everything else
  • FOZ - August 14, 2012 8:37 p.m.

No. I mean there was almost no challenge at all for the first 60 stars. And then you're forced to slog through numerous secret stars, making extremely slow progress. Replay Galaxy 1. You go to a galaxy, get a star, go back to the galaxy and get an entirely different star. A number of the galaxies had 3 unique stars, a secret star, and 2 comet stars. Whereas in Galaxy 2, you'll beat a galaxy and that's it. You come back to collect the coins, but it's the same star. And then the secret star is just a hidden star in still the same mission. And as for the green stars, those are just even more secret stars. The most unique stars I remember a Galaxy 2 level having was 2. Then maybe a comet star, and the rest were green stars. It made the game progress incredibly slowly and forced you to constantly backtrack and scrounge up stars. Super Mario 3D Land, in addition to having better pacing and better level design, vastly improved on it by switching to coins, of which there are 3 in every level. Galaxy 2 is not even close to Galaxy 1. The gameplay is the same, the design and pacing fail.

I was very tempted to stop reading when you mentioned NSMB - I've played that creatively bankrupt mess, and I can tell you that it doesn't belong anywhere near a list that's meant to highlight Mario finest games. I might have let it slide if it was NSMBWii (another flawed game, but at least that one was actually FUN), but I refuse to sit by and let you list NSMB next to games that are actually good. Sorry, but I had to say that. That game wasn't so much of a throwback as it was a mockery. The rest of the list is fine (though I never got around to playing the likes of Galaxy 2 or Super Mario Land). On a side note, I noticed the list only contained platformers and none of Mario's many, many spin-offs. Are you guys planning to make a separate list about those games? Paper Mario definitely deserves some love, and I loves me some Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour, too.
  • shawksta - August 14, 2012 4:40 p.m.

This list is for Mario's Major Platforming games. I personally still think NSMBW is a superior games but the first was still great, I don't understand the controversy on the NSMB series, I personally find it retorted but eh. Heavily agree with Galaxy 2 and SMB3
  • WTeen8 - August 14, 2012 4:41 p.m.

Super Mario World, and SMB3's order can be debated upon. Honestly I think world is better, but 3 is still a fantasic game. Although unless you're saving the rpg's for their own list, the absence of thousand year door is inexcusable

This probably should have beed titled, "Best Super Mario Games." I feel that the Mario universe is split into smaller franchises, with the Super Mario franchise being one of them. Also, I was reading that old article on SMB2, and realized something those articles of the old format had that these newer slideshow format articles don't. The pictures used in those articles were usually accompanied by a funny comment. With the slideshow, it's just one big picture and some information. That's not a bad thing by any means, but I enjoy the articles the most that are both informative and humorous. Of coarse, that's just one small detail, in a complete article. Anyways, great list!

Damnit, I love Mario 3. Well deserved spot.
  • LBD_Nytetrayn - August 14, 2012 5:31 p.m.

Great list! I think New Super Mario Bros. Wii deserves a spot, and Super Mario Bros. 2 should be a little higher, but if I had to narrow it down to ten, these would probably be it (save for the NSMB/Wii issue... love that Penguin Suit!).
  • Cyberninja - August 14, 2012 7:19 p.m.

Super Mario 64 is my favorite because it was my first the others still fun though.
  • RonnyLive19881 - August 14, 2012 7:58 p.m.

Major fail... I kept not seeing Sunshine and towards the end I thought for sure it was the top spot but then i see you've neglected it... Sunshine is better than NSMB and SMB3D combined. I even liked it more than SM64, but I still place 64 higher when listing due to nostalgia. Wow GR Lol, just wow.
  • iluvpkmnmonday - August 14, 2012 8:22 p.m.

I like Mario as much as the next gamer but I hated Sunshine. Granted it's the only 3D Mario I've played recently so maybe I'm forgetting if the others were the same way, but that infuriating camera made me want to punch a baby.
  • IceBlueKirby - August 14, 2012 8:11 p.m.

I wholeheartedly agree with this list. I might change the order a bit, but I wouldn't change what games are on it for sure. I love Mario games, and everything about them, even Super Mario Sunshine. It may have been weird (not as weird as Super Mario Land though) and the gameplay seemed a radical change at first, but once I got into it I enjoyed it thoroughly. The only thing Mario can't make fun is Golf, but it's not his fault. Golf is just so damn boring nobody can make it interesting.
