Destiny is not nearly as good as you make it out to be, and naming it GotY is implicitly supporting all of the dishonesty that surrounds that game. I don't care how much you enjoy it, you would have to be completely and utterly blinkered to not see all of its numerous and prominent shortfalls.

Their opinion is different from yours and so their collaborative choice for "Game of the Year" is wrong? Someone here sounds like a dick, and it's not the GamesRadar crew.
  • musashi1596 - December 8, 2014 10:41 a.m.

Opinion only goes so far, games have to be judged objectively. It could be somebody's opinion that Ride to Hell: Retribution should be GotY and they would be objectively wrong. And Destiny is an objectively unremarkble game. Destiny has a list of things wrong with it far longer than some of the games lower on this list, and has rightfully been subject to a great deal of controversy over things like cut content. How can one comfortably award it GotY?

There's no such thing as an objective review. Reviews by their nature are purely subjective. Im sure some people do like Ride to Hell, but does that make their taste in games wrong? If they like it enough to be GOTY, then fine. I honestly disagree, and am pretty sad that Bravely Default made it on the list while Persona Q is left out, but it's their opinion and they have a right to it. Hey, at least Unity isnt on here....

No, it doesnt mean that at all. People are entitled to like what they want to like. However, if they're effectively saying it's better than other games that do everything right? Then yeah, that's wrong.
  • overrated44 - December 8, 2014 12:22 p.m.

And in your opinion which games were better this year?
  • musashi1596 - December 8, 2014 12:32 p.m.

Dragon Age Inquisition would be a good place to start, seeing as it hit number 2. It got very little wrong.
  • overrated44 - December 8, 2014 12:52 p.m.

Well, other than the constant bugs, the regularly freezing and crashing to desktop and forcing me to go to the incredibly boring war room constantly. See, I like DA:I but I'm just showing you that someone can complain and dislike anything. Hence: Destiny in the opinion of the GamesRadar staff is the game of the year. Don't complain and whine about it, just say that in your opinion other games were better and move along, like an adult.
  • musashi1596 - December 8, 2014 12:55 p.m.

Can't vouch for the PC version, but I had no freezing issues on the PS4. I did have some minor framerate issues, hence 'very little'. It's not a big deal. The War Room, you finding that boring is indeed opinion. Plus it was mainly optional. Destiny, however, had MAJOR issues that should by all rights disqualify it from the top spot. Stuff you just can't ignore.
  • overrated44 - December 8, 2014 12:58 p.m.

Cool story. I'm done arguing, I'm simply trying to say that you being angry at a website's opinion of a game is childish.
  • musashi1596 - December 8, 2014 1:07 p.m.

I'm sorry, but I have to disagree. Strongly supporting a game with as many issues as Destiny has had sends a really bad message. It tells developers (or perhaps more accurately, publishers) that they can get away with the stunts that they are pulling and receive praise for churning out something that was half the product that it should have been. It's also horribly misleading. All the worst aspects of gaming continue because sites like GamesRadar not only accept it, they seem to actively encourage it. And if we don't speak about it, so do we. Frankly we should expect better.

Guys - we really love the fact you're so passionate about the games on this list, and we welcome the debate. Please keep it clean, though, and don't insult each other. We're running editorials all week about all 5 games in the top 5. Hopefully, they'll give you more to talk about, and help you understand our love for all these games.
  • bobob101 - December 8, 2014 11:11 a.m.

Feel free to use this line in any future arguments: "Opinions are like assholes. Everybody has them, and I don't want to see yours."
  • Divine Paladin - December 8, 2014 11:57 a.m.

Considering this is the same site that lets the person most hyped for a game review it, yes, their collaborative choice is wrong. Alien: Isolation, GRID Autosport, et alia are games that are decent to good, but given nearly perfect scores and raved about for months before and after launch as if they're the second coming. A 7-8/10 review by nearly every reviewer doesn't equal game of the year over something that's given 9+ unless the scale is different (since indies are naturally ranked a few points lower due to their size). I'd rather they have picked a game like Isolation if they're gonna play the hype game. It's why I don't trust 9/10 reviews from GR anymore. I just come for the lists and Top 7s and such. Doesn't help matters that the advertisements on the site are often Destiny. That leads me to question the merit of the decision here.
  • overrated44 - December 8, 2014 12:20 p.m.

Then why are you reading an article that is basically a review of all the games to come out this year?
  • Divine Paladin - December 8, 2014 1:31 p.m.

Every now and then I hope they'll come to their senses.
