Best ever gaming remakes

God of War Collection

Sometimes you don't need to remake the entire game. Just re-release an upcoming game's predecessors as an HD remix compilation and watch the sales come pouring in. The God of War games were among the best-looking on PS2 and seeing them in true HD carries their impact through to as-near-as-dammit current-gen level. Any classic game could be given this treatment - let's have some more.

Above: Few current-gen games have God of War 2's sense of scale

Resident Evil

Forget the DS port with the extra first-person zombie slashing sections - it's the Gamecube remake that really made us scream. Sure, the backgrounds are still fixed-perspective (which was a retro nod even then, considering Code Veronica's existence), but the quality of the character models, rejigged combat and vastly enhanced atmosphere make this a survival horror masterpiece. It's available on Wii too, if you feel like killing zombies with the power *cough* of motion control.

Perfect Dark

The Xbox Live conversion may be almost a completely straight port, but the upgraded graphics and silky-smooth movement bring this into remake territory. The multiplayer is still a great experience and, while imperfect, the AI behaviour is much more human than a lot of current-gen FPS games. It's just a shame that the completed XBLA version of Goldeneye fell victim to red tape. That would have been amazing.

Conker's Bad Fur Day: Live and Reloaded

"A joy to play, a social-life-threatening venture into the ever-appealing (and for once, original) world of virtual war, and a game bursting with strategic action the like of which is absent from 95% of online Xbox games." That's what we said in 2005 and we were right. Conker was an amazing game on N64, but redoing it with the best console technology available at the time (Xbox) and adding online multiplayer was a masterstroke.

Above: If any one screenshot said 'classic Rare', this is it. Pure quality

You guys forgot about (breathe in) Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix (breathe out), Prince of Persia Classic and especialy Bioni Commando Rearmed. I didn't even know about the Conker remake, can I still get this on my 360 from XBox Live Arcade? Loved The Twin Snakes and the Gamecube remake of Resident Evil, by the way, haven't played the other ones.

Personal favorite choice for an HD remake? Eternal Darkness. Hell yes.

I would die right away if there was a remake of a 1992 PC game called Moonstone: A Hard Days Knight developed by Mindscape. This game still gives me the thrills, 18 years later. An everlasting gem!

Splinter Cell Chaos Theory. Nothing better than the great story, revolutionary co-op, and improved SvM from PT. This game with achievements, higher resolutions, and Xbox Guide functionality would be a for sure buy. I would even pay $60 for it. (maybe throw in SC and SCPT singleplayer for good measure)

...especially Bionic Commando Rearmed. I hate typos. I'd love to see a remake of Kid Icarus, simply because I never played the game on NES as a kid and it's still regarded a classic. Same goes for Goldeneye; I never had an N64. Resident Evil 2 and 3 and the first Silent Hill could also use a nice update.

Remake Morrowind. Pretty please! The atmosphere in that game is still better than Oblivion's, if the gameplay is not up to snuff. So, updating it would make perfect sense.

Eternal Darkness and Chaos Theory still look fine, but if an HD remake can make the atmosphere and experience even better, I'm in.

@MaynardJ - Actually, after much discussion we deliberately left out Super Street Fighter II HD. Dave H swears the online mode is full of glitches and he should know. Also Prince of Persia Classic didn't really do it for me - much prefer the Game Gear version. But yes, Bionic Commando is highly deserving.

@OnyxOblivion Hell yes to Morrowind, been hoping for an update to that since I finished Oblivion

Comix Zone please! Remake it. Make it only hand drawn 2d of course. I want lots of animation frames and even 60 fps. It should be better than high quality cartoon. Oh and resident evil on GC is the best in the series and the graphics are still look amazing. The high-detailed 3D models and real time shadows blend perfectly with the backgrounds. If it was HD it would be much prettier than the boring looking RE5

Some more suggestions: Prince of Persia 2: The Shadow and the Flame Doom 1 and 2 Duke Nukem 3-D Streets of Rage (or any other side-scrolling beat 'em up from the SNES and Mega Drive days) Soul Reaver Terminal Velocity (does anyone else know this game?) Tekken 2 Soul Blade Lemmings

I actually don't like MGS: TS purely because of the Matrix action, too over the top for me, and also the voice acting, although re-recorded, is the worse of the two, in my opinion. Otherwise the game would be good, though. I'd want to see the whole Legacy of Kain series in HD remakes, as well as Tekken 3, which in my opinion is the best entry in the series so far. Ace Combat 2 or 3 would be nice too, as well as Final Fantasy VIII (Yes, I went there). Oh, and Fahrenheit (or Indigo Prophecy, whatever).

Nice list but what about Wipeout HD?!
  • EnragedTortoise1 - April 6, 2010 12:13 p.m.

Ratchet and Clank Collection. That is all I want. First three games on one disc a la GOW Collection , with individual trophies for each would be EPIC.

Red Alert 2 with current RTS graphics, that would be soooooo good and definitely Jedi Power Battles omg that game is so amazing and hardly anyone I know has played it, remake that and youve got the best star wars game in years

I had a dream that "Conker's Bad Fur Day: Live and Reloaded" was on the Xbox Live Arcade. This needs to happen as it is a fantastic game, already has Live multiplayer and boasts gorgeous graphics. And I need to stop playing video games minutes before I go to sleep.
  • Silentboy - April 6, 2010 12:22 p.m.

Star Fox 64 or GTA Vice City are prime for good HD remakes
  • MaynardJ - April 6, 2010 12:23 p.m.

I played Jedi Power Battles but never got past the armadillo boss.
  • Hurricrane - April 6, 2010 12:41 p.m.

I want a System Shock 2 remake or a Freedom Force remake... so baisically anything Irrational has done. I'd also go for Mark of Kri or any space shooter
  • Skidd777 - April 6, 2010 12:41 p.m.

I'm wishing for remakes of the PS2 Ratchet & Clank games, also the original Playstation Spyro games.
