Battlestar Galactica Online is a browser-based game

Will fans be frakkin disappointed by an MMO that runs in Windows Explorer?

Today, NBC Universal and Bigpoint games announced that a Battlestar Galactica MMO is scheduled to launch this fall. We were really, really excited… until we found out that it’s going to be a browser-based game. Is anyone else saying, “What the frakk?”

Star Wars fans are getting Star Wars: The Old Republic, which is shaping up to be a truly epic MMO from BioWare. "It's the biggest game I've ever worked on. I'm surprised at the enormity of it every other week. We're creating more content than Mass Effect 2, Mass Effect 1, Dragon Age and Knights of the Old Republic put together, and throw in Baldur's Gate, too," explained creative director James Ohlen to our friends at PC Gamer in their recent April issue. Meanwhile, Star Trek fans are enjoying a solid MMO based on their favorite TV show from Atari and Cryptic Studios.

Here’s what the press release has to say about how the game work in the most general way possible:

“Players will be able to choose to play as cylons or humans in a constant struggle to control the universe or just survive its perils. A blend of tactical space combat, exploration, and mission-based gameplay will provide a diverse experience. The dramatic missions will define the game's overall storyline, enabling the player to delve into mysteries of the Battlestar universe. Battlestar Galactica Online will create a new standard for web games, with beautiful 3d graphics and innovative game mechanics bringing a new level of game play to browser based MMOG. Assets from the television production will be integrated into the game to deliver an even more authentic experience.”

Sounds like it could be great. Let’s hope that Battlestar Galactica Online will do the series justice while created a “new standard” for web games when it releases later this year. So say we all.
