Aykroyd offers up more Ghostbusters details

With scripting now in full swing, the ever-enthusiastic Dan Aykroyd just can’t stop talking about plans for the third Ghostbusters film.

According to the actor, things are definitely moving apace, and that both Sigourney Weaver (a  holdout until recently) and Bill Murray are in place.

“Now we're at a point that there's a story that he (Murray) can accept and that's going to work, and I think we're going to be in production fairly soon,” he tells the LA Times’ Hero Complex blog. ”We could be in production by winter."

So what does he want to see from the new story, penned by Year One writers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky? "I'd like it to be a passing-of-the-torch movie. Let's revisit the old characters briefly and happily and have them there as family but let's pass it on to a new generation."

He makes mention of a five-member new team, with female ‘busters alongside their male counterparts.

And as director? He’d ideally like Ivan Reitman to return, though fears he’s too busy. His second choice would be original GB co-writer Harold Ramis. “He has a lot of things going on, but it would be wonderful to see him do it."

Let’s hope Ramis and Murray have patched up the rift that cracked open in their friendship during the making of Groundhog Day.

And talking of Murray, Aykroyd doesn’t want him blamed for the third movie’s slow progress through development hell.

"I don't put not making the third movie on Billy. We can't do that. And Billy, you can't blame an artist for not wanting to do the same thing again. He did two of them, for God's sake.

“Although I'm the biggest cheerleader as the originator of the concept but I've never begrudged Billy not doing a third movie.  never said he held it up or that he refused. You can't force somebody into it…”

But you can tempt them with cash, it would seem…
