Avatar smashes more records

And so the blue-skinned giant rolls on, smashing all that stand before it.

Not content with a gargantuan performance at the box office that saw it crowned the highest grossing movie of all time, Avatar has now sold a whopping 6.7 million DVD and Blu-Rays in its opening four days in North America. Kerching!

The achievement just pips the record set by former top dog The Dark Knight , which sold 2.7 million on its opening day, 500,000 copies shy of Avatar ’s 3.2 million.

Perhaps more impressive however, is that 2.7 million units of that four-day haul were Blu-Ray editions. It took The Dark Knight the best part of 18 months to limp to 2.5 million Blu-Ray sales. Avatar has exceeded that total in less than a week.

Factor in the fact that the film is still soldiering on in a number of cinemas, and that this release contains no real extras to speak of, and it’s an astonishing figure.

Consider also, that this is only the 2D edition, with a 3D version set to take advantage of the upcoming wave of specially equipped TVs. The execs at 20th Century Fox must be drooling at the prospect…

Ready to fork-out for the DVD, or sick and tired of the little blue men?
