Avatar makes box office history

We saw it. We loved it . And, by all accounts, you saw it and loved it, too.

At least, that’s what the numbers are telling us. James Cameron’s much-touted blue-skinned cinematic ‘revolution’ may not have completely reinvented the wheel like it promised.

But in just 17 days, Avatar has reeled in a staggering $1 billion in worldwide box office ker-chings.

It’s only the fifth film in the history of cinema to do so (behind The Dark Knight , Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest , LOTR: Return of the King and Titanic ), which gives you some idea of just how much Cameron and co will be celebrating today.

Plus, not only has it reached an unbelievable monetary milestone, but Avatar has done so ridiculously quickly . Its 17 day money-grab positively laughs in the tortured face of The Dark Knight ’s 33 days.

And yes, this means that Cameron now has two movies in the top five biggest earners ever. Must be doing wonders for his ego...

Looks like we can expect Avatar 2 pretty soon. Hopefully it won’t take 12 years this time.
