Assassin's Creed II

Epic. Brutal. Educational? Get ready to experience the Renaissance by stabbing it in the face

Words: Mikel Reparaz on November 17, 2009

It’s no secret we loved the first Assassin’s Creed – maybe even a little too much. Climbing up impossibly tall structures and stealthily murdering Templar knights during the sharply realized Crusades was so much fun, we accepted certain flaws – like the repetitive side-tasks you had to undertake before each assassination mission could be unlocked, or the way the game sent you back to your home fortress after each successful takedown – as minor irritations. But as it turned out, a lot of other players didn’t. Neither, it seems, did the developers of Assassin’s Creed II.

Above: Welcome to the Renaissance, bitches

With the bigger, bloodier and hugely improved sequel, most of the complaints that made the first AC so divisive are gone. Side tasks? Sidelined to strictly optional status; the focus is now firmly on making your enemies’ lives miserable before you kill them. Walking around reading emails in the near future? Not even for one second. Riding horses across miles of samey wilderness? Convenient fast-travel stations now enable you to cover huge distances in seconds (although horses are still useful). Annoying beggars? Replaced by less-annoying minstrels who can be distracted with thrown coins. Awkward fights? Well, those still look pretty similar, but they’ve been retooled to be faster, much more varied and easier to understand.

Above: Check out the above video for a taste of the free-running action

What makes Assassin’s Creed II great isn’t just that it fixes most of what was wrong with the first game, though. It’s that it takes what the first game started and uses it to build something much bigger, much more involving and much more fun. The open-world action is similar – you’ll still spend a lot of time free-running across rooftops and obstacles (which is a blast), climbing up the sides of gargantuan buildings, assassinating unwitting enemies and getting into seemingly endless swordfights with guards – but the sequel expands on the original formula so much, and so well, that Assassin’s Creed feels like a training run by comparison.

This is partly because the world you’ll explore – which this time consists of five cities set during the Italian Renaissance – feels much more fleshed out and believable than the original, even coming complete with a historical database you can access every time you come across a notable person or landmark. It’s also partly because the new hero, cocky young nobleman-turned-assassin Ezio Auditore, has a much livelier, more charming personality than his cold, collected ancestor Altair, and comes off as more of an ass-kicking, morally ambiguous superhero than a merciless killer. It also doesn’t hurt that his adventure – which begins in 1476 and ends in 1499 – has a much more epic, personal feel than the first game did, as you see Ezio slowly evolve from a scared teenager, desperate for vengeance after his father and brothers are executed, to a near-invincible badass in pursuit of the conspiracy that killed them.

Above: You even get to see his face once in a while, too

He’s not a lone wolf, either, and the cast of characters who come together to help him are more believable, more actively helpful and much easier to care about than any of the first Creed’s supporting assassins. They also represent a good mix of fictional characters – like Ezio’s family and his acrobatic thief allies – and actual historical figures, including the great Lorenzo di Medici and Leonardo da Vinci, who as Ezio’s closest friend plays a major role in the story.

Mostly, though, ACII is a huge improvement because there’s tons more to do this time around. In addition to Ezio’s central story missions – which will take around 15-20 hours to complete if you blast straight through – there’s a lot of optional stuff that it’s in your interest to uncover. Aside from the side missions – which consist largely of beating up faithless husbands, racing thieves across rooftops, and killing targets for money – you’ll be able to ferret out hundreds of treasure chests, eagle feathers, semi-mystical glyphs and statuettes hidden throughout the world, gaining rewards for finding them all.

Above: Also, you can stab guards in the head with dual hidden blades, which is awesome

There are also squads of thieves, mercenaries and prostitutes to command, who are useful for luring, fighting and distracting guards, respectively. There’s a failing town you can rebuild and invest in, and it’ll reward you with a safehouse and regular cash payments. There are new vehicles to pilot, not the least of which is one of Leonardo da Vinci’s legendary flying machines. There are also six semi-hidden Assassin tombs for you to explore, which take the form of vast, Prince of Persia-style environmental-puzzle dungeons that can eventually net you a near-invincible suit of armor.

Or, to put it another way:

So that’s all fine and good, but it leaves one question for disgruntled would-be fans of the first game: What about Desmond?

Mmkay, one more thing I meant to say:

Altair's outfit is WAY more badass, because- first of all, an assassin shouldn't be wearing some beastly (Ezio's) outfit that CLEARLY looks like an assassin... Also, it pissed me off that when you get Altair's "armour" in the second one, it looks absolutely nothing like it... It's black! (maybe mine glitched up and just wouldn't like me recolour it?)

*In the middle of what I just said*
"Everything the Templars you assassinate **say** is..." is what I meant to say

This is completely wrong... Assassin's Creed (the first)- Amazing. One of my favourite games. Assassin's Creed 2, however, was devastatingly bad. In the first game, it is completely original, and the story is much more tight, and well done. Altair is a completely more complex character, and there is development in himself. He at first is an arrogant man, which blinded him, but by the end, he has realized what has been going on, and has changed his attitude. Ezio, who although everyone believes has some personality, does not really. Throughout the whole game he is just some arrogant (just as Altair was), and careless child (although he is not a teen for the whole game, he sure as hell acts like one).
As for the game itself, the script in the first is solid. Everything the Templars you assassinate is profound and well written. The second game's script is filled with idiotic one-liners, and everything anyone says is just something like, 'it's not my time to go', or, 'it can't be'. The story in the first is much bigger than in the second, too. In the first, it develops into just getting to be a high-ranking assassin again, to some deep plot into ruling everything. The second- kill everyone to avenge your family. I mean, come on, put some damn thought into it. The fact alone that at times, you will find out it's suddenly been ten years since your family was killed, and that is completely out of nowhere, and unnecessary... Okay, sure, the first one gets tedious with the constant and few things you do, but that's what happens when a company dabbles in something no one's done before. Also- the second one is just as tedious.

Maybe I should write my own review :P This game sucked, after the first was amazing.

P.S. To those you said the beggers and drunk/crazy shirtless men were annoying- that is exactly the point...

WOW!! Before I played the first Ac I didn't really play these types of game, but Thank You Ubisoft cause i'm 100% hooked. I've completed both AC1 & AC2 and i've pre booked the third and can't wait to play it in November. Since playing AC I now play other adventure type games and love em.
Thanks to Games Radar for all reveiws hints and tips where would all us gamers be without you?

those beggers on AC1 and those mentally unstable guys with no shirts that pushed you ALL THE F'N TIME were so so annoying I eventually assassinated them all, lol. Simply punching the beggers is a good way to shut them up. Then they throw rocks at you when you climb a building near them, lol.

AC2 - on amazon new for $30 ($60 at blockbuster) is really fun. The third AC will be even more epic, I think.

    Peace.

The game is brilliant apart from one thing. (on ps3 anyway). It only has an autosave function and has no option to save your game yourself from the pause menu. This is all very well until the game crashes during a save and you end up with a damaged save file!!!???!!! I had nearly beat AC2 (94%) when this happened and I was seriously pissed off. Afterwards, I noticed that save files cannot be copied to a usb stick ( or anywhere else for that matter) for safe keeping so, you solely have to rely on the autosave and thats a bit pish after 30 odd hours of gameplay. I have started the game again with the ps3 update installed and so far it hasn't crashed or froze yet but I still can't truly enjoy the game knowing all my hard work might just be yanked out from under me at any moment! come on UBISOFT, trust us to save our selves. Will keep you posted with this play through...................................

This game was great i played it on Xbox though. My sisters boyfriend asked me if i wanted it and i said sure. So i took it home and beat the glyphs, the feathers and, the story line in less then two days. :) I recommend it to anybody who has played the first one. Much better. And it's a lot more meaningful and you discover more stuff. And I know they are going to make a 4th one from how it ends....

Been playing this since I got two weeks ago, I love it, and am eagerly awaiting the third installment and if we're lucky, a 4th one too I hope :D
Also, in your breif montage of counter kills, I'm surprised you left out the flagpole move with the spear - I HATE spears but that move gets me every time. 8D *nostalgic thought*

u know on thing that I didn't like in AC is that you couldn't save the game anywhere. Why would I want that, simply becoz I wanted to try that kill from different angles and different ways/approaches. I used to do that continously with Max Payne and it was a lot of fun. Kepp trying the same kill till it looks good and also saves a LOT OF FRUSTRATION when you don't get the kill right due to some stupid mistake!
