Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood is no 2.5

As you start the game as Ezio, a fully-fledged assassin, how are you planning to encourage progression?

Patrick Plourde: With Ezio as the master assassin, we can explore a new angle – it’s about leadership, and being more reflective on your life. With a new character you have to restart with new motivation. We have a guy at the midpoint of his life who learns that he’s a vessel. He fulfilled his mission and wonders what to do next. You’re still an assassin, you’re still fighting Templars. There’s a lot of stuff to do. The Borgia are more powerful than ever. Roderigo is back, but Brotherhood is going to be more about his son, Cesare Borgia, at the height of his family’s power. We’re following real history, and playing with it. We’re telling people our version of those events. But in terms of gameplay progression, we’re going for a different angle than AC II.

How do you go about recruiting followers?

VP: It’s systemic. We wanted to dress it and justify it. We wanted it to be a portal for saving lost souls.

PP: As you take away the power of the Borgia in Rome, you increase your own power. That enables you to have a bigger guild. There are people that are fighting the Borgia in the world, and you go there, fight with them, and they see you and ask to join your guild. Once there, you are able to send them on assassinations that happen elsewhere in Europe. You won’t actually be able to play these assassinations, but players are going to be able to read the story about what happens. You also get paid by the guild and you can use it to acquire new skills.

During each mission there are assassins everywhere in the shadows and they are available on call - you use the [left shoulder button] for context sensitive commands. Say you’re in a fight, and you need help, you can have the best fighter come to your aid by tapping [left shoulder button].

VP: We wanted to avoid having to micromanage. There are RPG elements, but it needs to be contextual.

PP: It starts with strategy (where you upgrade characters before each mission) then once you’re in the game it’s more about how you react. You could use assassins to set up a trap and use distractions to access a target – like provoking a fight while you walk around undetected. They’ll have access to ranged weapons, smoke bombs – all the tools you have.

Can you tell us about the changes to the combat system?

PP: We changed the code for the AI and removed parts that had them just standing and waiting. They’re going to be able to interrupt the assassin as he’s making moves. There will be more reactivity in the game world too. Also, as soon as you start a combo, as long as you’re not interrupted, you’re going to be able to kill enemies in one shot.

VP: We favoured a defensive system in AC II and this was appreciated by many players, but the more hardcore player wanted to get done with it and go faster and get rewarded. So we said okay, let’s keep the best bits and rewarded offensive play more.

Did you consider incorporating a co-operative mode into the single-player?

VP: We have a problem with co-op. We did consider it, but the thing is, we’ve been considering it since the first Assassin’s Creed. We haven’t justified it yet, and in our universe everything is justified. A subject wouldn’t be able to have two ancestors at the same time. It just doesn’t work in that world. We’re justifying the multiplayer with the Templar universe. That allows us a brand new range of options to tell a different story. We’ll find a way for co-op. It’s going to be there for sure… eventually.

Multiplayer looks so cool, cant wait till this game comes out on PC. And for the co-op problem, what about one of Lucy's ancestors, since (according to the multiplayer) you can sync Animii together, so lucy plays as an extra helping hand or something

Oh, and as for why DRM is understandable: wanting people to pay for stuff that you make ftw? Maybe this is just me, and maybe it's only because I'm not a whiny child, but I have no problem needing to be connected to the internet to play a game. I have an internet connection. Clearly you do too. If the internet goes down then OH NOES! Looks like you have to play a different game until it comes back on! Or, you know, read a book or something. Or play on a console, if you own one. Or go hang out with friends. Or go see a movie. Or rent a movie. Or drink yourself into a stupor. Or cry yourself to sleep because you can't play this game right now. Man, having all these options must suck.

Well, apparently I offended someone who was already fairly butthurt, so I'll keep this simple: (this is @ JohnnyMaverik, in case anyone was wondering...) 1) I don't know where I made it seem like I don't know what I was talking about, as I merely said DRM sucks (which pretty much everyone agrees with), and DRM's existence is understandable (which pretty much anyone with half a brain and the ability to do some basic research agrees with). 2) In your angry response to me, you didn't actually respond to any of my points, which leads me to believe that you can't, either due to an inability to refute the latter statement, or due to the crippling pain you feel when you think of what DRM has done to you... 3) You say "the people that would have bought the games that came with it have not due to the DRM," as though nobody has bought it because of the evil DRM. However, the fact that PC games with DRM continue to be released means that clearly they feel like they're making enough money to warrant it. Furthermore, studies have shown that a majority of people who pirate games would not have bought the game in the first place, meaning Ubisoft don't actually lose money in that case. Sure, some people won't buy the game because of DRM and assorted ass-hattery, but those people are generally the whiny ones that Ubisoft don't want to associate with anyway. 4) Your statement that "The DRM has been hacked" does not actually back up your boo-hooing. I feel like, since people have the option of hacking the DRM and making it less intrusive, some of those that would have steered clear because of it may now actually purchase the game. 5) Before you mistakenly accuse someone of not knowing what they're talking about, you may want to do a little research of your own. Oh, and proper spelling and sentence structure, as well as not going off on an angry rampage will help you appear less like a child. Well, this turned out a lot less simple than I initially wanted, but there you have it. Still excited as all hell about this game, by the way.

All I know is Ubisoft actually listens to their customers complaints and changes what the fans don't like about the game so this will be a good one I'd say.

I love this idea and hopefully this is what they're doing for Mass Effect. No multiplayer in ME3, just do something like this.

When I said Brotherhood was AC 2.5, I just meant that it did not continue the AC storyline, so I wanted to make sure no fanboys could say the story was completely forgotten in this next game. I already knew Brotherhood was going to be awesome: restore Rome with your money, fight Assassins and Templars in online multiplayer, PLAY AS EZIO AGAIN! XD
