American Psycho: The Musical?

If Spider-Man, Nine To Five and Shrek can be turned into show tune-crammed theatrical experiences, then clearly anything can. But American Psycho? One group of producers thinks it’ll work.

David Johnson, Craig Roessler, Jessie Singer, Aaron Ray and Nate Bolotin have teamed up to buy the rights and develop a musical based on Mary Harmon’s 1999 movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter .

While no script or songs have been written, let alone anyone hired to work on them, the plan is apparently to roughly adapt the tale of Wall Street Broker Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale), who hacks up prostitutes and rivals to balance the ennui of his business-driven life.

Cutthroat business

David Johnson, a former Wall Street lawyer, was apparently inspired to nab the project because of “the great economic divide in this country."

And fellow producer Jessie Singer is quick to point out that he wants the musical to retain Brett Easton Ellis’ original novel’s “electric charge, which inspired both fans and haters.”

The show is aiming for a 2010 launch. And while Bale isn’t expected to get anywhere near it, he could always channel recent events to help him recreate Bateman’s inner rage.
