Dan O'Bannon, one of the screenwriters behind Alien and Total Recall, has died at the age of 63. He passed away in Los Angeles following a short illness.
O’Bannon first came to SF fans attention after he met John Carpenter at USC in the early ’70s, and their film school project, Dark Star, was picked up and turned into a movie. O’Bannon co-wrote, edited, served as special effects supervisor and acted in the film.
He was also part of the visual effects team on Star Wars before becoming a screenwriter, with credits including Alien, Blue Thunder, Screamers, Bleeders and The Return Of The Living Dead and The Resurrected, which he also directed.
