Albatross review

A bristling breakout turn leavens tired material in Niall MacCormick’s coming-of-anger. Downton Abbey’s Jessica Brown Findlay sparks with snark as 17-year-old Emelia, a wild-but wounded wannabe writer who cuts a swathe through a hotel-running family by befriending daughter Beth (Felicity Jones) and shagging Beth’s dad (Sebastian Koch). Naff albatross metaphors, confused sympathies and a shortfall of dramatic interest ultimately stifle a promising core of teen female friendship, but Findlay’s savage way with a putdown – “You fuck trumpet!” – suggests fame beckons.
