There aren’t that many M-rated games on the Nintendo DS. So if you’re looking to pass the time with something a little darker and a lot weirder than your average JRPG, we suggest you check out the demo for Aksys Games’ 999: 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors. You can play the browser-based demo by clicking here.

The visual novel follows the story of Junpei, a college student who finds himself trapped on a ship with an old school friend from 9 years ago. The number ‘five’ is written on a nearby door in what appears to be blood and you experience a flashback of a masked man welcoming you to the ‘Nonary Game.’ As you unravel the mystery of why you’re trapped on this boat you’ll meet other strangers and will need to figure out how to escape.

Depending on how you interact with the other characters, you can expect multiple endings from 999, which appears to be in the running for our ‘WTF JRPG of the Year’ award along with Criminal Girls and Catherine.
