5th Cell gets gritty with new Hybrid screenshots

5th Cell, developer of Scribblenauts, threw a bit of a curve ball last year when it leaked out early artwork and a teaser trailer for a totally-not-Scribblenauts-esque shooter entitled Hybrid. This week, 5th Cell continued its teasing with a fresh new batch of seriously-not-even-close-to-Scribblenauts screenshots designed to get us all in a toasty, post-apocalyptic mood...

Hybrid's story takes place years after a pesky asteroid wiped out nearly all of humanity and split its survivors into two warring factions: the Variants, humans who were genetically altered by a virus within the asteroid, and the Paladins, humans who were immune to the asteroid's evil ways but now have to share a planet with the infected.

Little is known of the actual gameplay besides the fact that players will be able to pick their sides and upgrade their characters through unlockable upgrades, abilities, armor and weapons. The game will also showcase a new 'Combat Focused Movement' feature, the details of which are still under wraps. Hey, as long as we don't have to spell out guns or bullet types, we're cool.

A full, hands-on version of 5th Cell's Hybrid will be revealed at the upcoming 2011 Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. That teaser trailer, if you missed it, is below:
