The Moment: The Driver steps into a lift with his neighbour Irene and a hitman hired to kill him. He kisses Irene, and then head-stomps the killer to death.

Andrei Rublev (1966)
The Moment: A boy, who has persuaded a town he knows the secret of how to make a giant bell, watches on anxiously as the first test proves successful and the bell tolls.
Wipe Away A Tear When: The boy admits to painter Andrei Rublev that he didn't know how to make the bell but was working from faith alone. Rublev breaks his vow of silence to predict their future: "You’ll cast bells. I’ll paint icons."
The Life And Death Of Colonel Blimp (1943)
The Moment: German refugee Theo Kretschmar-Schuldorff is detained at immigration and asked to explain why he's entering Britain, so he tells them in a single-take, three-minute monologue.

United 93 (2006)
The Moment: The passengers decide to storm the cockpit of their hijacked plane. "Let's roll."

City Lights (1931)
The Moment: The Tramp is reunited with the once-blind flower girl whose operation he paid for, and she recognises him by his touch.

The Moment: Rocky Balboa takes Apollo Creed the full 15 rounds, but he's bothered about the result than finding his girlfriend: "Adrian!"

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
The Moment: Homicidal computer HAL 9000 'begs' for its life as Dave Bowman takes drastic action to shut it down. "I'm afraid, Dave. Dave, my mind is going. I can feel it."
Wipe Away A Tear When: HAL starts singing Victorian music hall ballad Daisy Bell and the electronic voice gradually falters and stops as he's shut down.
The Moment: Emperor Commodus demands that a masked Maximus reveal his identity.
Wipe Away A Tear When: Maximus tells him. That speech in full: "My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next."
Planet Of The Apes (1968)

Blade Runner (1982)
The Moment: A dying Roy Batty saves the life of Rick Deckard, the 'blade runner' whose mission is to track down the fugitive replicant.
Wipe Away A Tear When: "Batty tells Deckard what his death means. "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I've watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die."
The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
The Moment: Warden Norton, confused and angry at the absence of Andy Dufresne from his cell, throws a rock at the poster on the wall… and it carries straight through.
Wipe Away A Tear When: In flashback, we see Andy emerge from a sewage tunnel to freedom. He might be covered in shit, but he's deliriously happy as he throws his arms to the sky.
Star Wars (1977)
The Moment: With seconds left until the Rebel base is in range of the Death Star, Luke is flying blind and Vader has him in his sights. What could possibly go right?
Wipe Away A Tear When: Han Solo "yee-haws" to the rescue, taking out Vader and giving Luke the chance to use the Force. "You're all clear, kid, now let's blow this thing and go home!"
The Moment: With everybody at their lowest ebb, all of the characters unite in an unexpected sing-song of Aimee Mann's Wise Up .
