50 Coolest Movie Friendships

Knocked Up (2007)

The Cool Friends: The friendship that blossoms between Paul Rudd and Seth Rogen rings very true to anyone who's been introduced to a girlfriend's friend's boyfriend. Initial mistrust soon turns into an alliance which then becomes a full-blown bromance. Even the girls begin to get a bit jealous!

Coolest Moment: Their trip to Vegas, in which they take the inadvisable decision to watch Cirque du Soleil on mushrooms!

The Untouchables (1987)

The Cool Friends: You couldn't blame Eliot Ness for experiencing a degree of trepidation at the task of taking down Al Capone, but fortunately for him, he's got the bluff Malone at his side to ensure his head doesn't drop. Part mentor, part friend, all badass, it's a genuinely tearful moment when the older man dies in his friend's arms.

Coolest Moment: Malone talks Ness through Chicago tactics. "He pulls a knife, you pull a gun. He sends one of yours to the hospital, you send one of his to the morgue. That's the Chicago way."

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953)

The Cool Friends: Lorelei and Dorothy, a pair of song-and-dance merchants capable of charming every moneyed man who comes their way. Lorelei is the one who comes up with the schemes and Dorothy is the one who cleans up when things go wrong. Without each other they'd be on the brink of a breakdown and terminally bored respectively…

Coolest Moment: Two Little Girls From Little Rock . Absolute showstopper.

Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989)

The Cool Friends: Bill S. Preston and Ted "Theodore" Logan, who together form that bastion of guitar-based awesomeness, Wyld Stallyns. Despite their time travelling antics, you always get the feeling they'd rather be lounging about at one or other's houses, playing air guitar and calling each other "dude".

Coolest Moment: Their wildly successful history presentation goes down a storm at the film's close. Bodacious, fellas.

The Avengers (2012)

The Cool Friends: Black Widow and Hawkeye, a brother and sister in arms who fight along side each other whilst always watching the other's back. You wouldn't want to piss either of them off, really…

Coolest Moment:
More than holding their own alongside their super-powered brethren in the final smackdown with the Chitauri invaders.

The Incredibles (2004)

The Cool Friends: Mr. Incredible and Frozone might be slightly past their prime when it comes to crime-fighting, but that doesn't stop them slipping out every once in a while to keep their eye in. Some buddies play golf together. These guys save the world. Whatever floats your boat.

Coolest Moment: Frozone immobilises a pesky police officer who keeps insisting he wants him to "freeze". Bad choice of words…

Starsky & Hutch (2004)

The Cool Friends: One plays it by the book, the other bends the rules. One's a dab hand with the ladies, the other… not so much. One cries a little more readily than his pal, but together they get things done. They're Starsky and Hutch!

Coolest Moment: The boys set about wooing Carmen Electra and Amy Smart, crooning along to an acoustic guitar before hitting a the disco in fine fashion. What a double-act...

Walking And Talking (1996)

The Cool Friends: Laura and Amelia face an age old problem among female friends in their thirties, as the former gets engaged and the latter begins to feel abandoned. Neuroses are batted about left right and centre, but thankfully, the two friends remain there for each other despite the different directions their lives are taking.

Coolest Moment: The row they have over Amelia's perceived neediness is searing in its intensity, but one many women will be able to relate to.

Inception (2010)

The Cool Friends: This one might be stretching the definition of friendship a touch, but despite the constant sniping, you can tell that Eames and Arthur are really rather fond of one another. A friendship built on mutual respect then, even if the two men are rather different in their approach to the task at hand.

Coolest Moment: "You mustn't be afraid to dream a little bigger, darling," chuckles Eames as he dwarfs Arthur's weapon with a sizeable piece of hardware.

Indiana Jones & The Temple Of Doom (1984)

The Cool Friends: It says much for Indy's patience that he manages to put up with Short Round's hyperactive antics and Willie's indignant bleating all in the same movie, but the former does at least help him out of a few scrapes. And unlike many of Indy's acquaintances, he can be trusted!

Coolest Moment: Pitching up with his rickshaw at the perfect moment to aid and abet Indy's escape from Club Obi-Wan.
