
Dead or Alive has always been the gaudy savant of the fighting game genre. Flashier and less technical than Street Fighter, but not as absurd or button-mashy as Soul Calibur, it's easy to pick up and hard to put down. Unfortunately, thanks to some less than subtle commercials and spinoffs, it’s mostly known as the bouncy boob game nowadays. Maybe it’s just the smaller screen or Soul Calibur’s latest lascivious ladies, but this side of DOA has been agreeably toned down...

When we first heard the 3DS would offer downloadable Game Boy titles, the first thing that came to mind was this exceptional remake/sequel to the original Donkey Kong. While the first few minutes are a straight up recreation of the iconic opening DK levels, the game quickly escalates into a full-on puzzle platformer. By the end, you’ll have solved 101 levels filled with moving platforms, treacherous pitfalls, vicious enemies and, of course, a tie-wearing, barrel-tossing ape.

It’s entirely likely that you will hate this game during the first hour of play. You might decry its difficulty, you might scream at the chaotic nature of the gameplay, and you might curse its novella of a tutorial. It will be frustrating and problematic. Much like a new puppy bought without your consultation that won’t stop crapping on the floor, though, you’ll probably eventually see something redeeming in the cute little furry creature. However, unlike the puppy, who will eventually demand and receive your unrequited love, Dream Trigger 3D will likely become just a game that you don’t necessarily hate...
