  • Unit sales for the Nintendo 3DS have reached the one million mark in Japan. That’s usually good news, but while the milestone is a badge of success for any machine, it comes 13 weeks after launch, revealing that the 3DS system is moving at a snail’s pace when compared to Nintendo’s more recent handheld consoles. The original DS, for example, reached the same mark after only four weeks on the market.

Japanese sales scorekeeper Enterbrain reported the 3DS' achievement this week, having earlier notched up the one million milestone for the DS Lite and DSi after eight weeks. The ham-handed DSi XL (sold as the DSi LL in Japan) took 25 weeks to sell a million units in Japan – not surprising, as even chunky-pawed Americans were largely blasé about the device...

  • Three major gaming companies had their public networks attacked by hackers over the weekend, with customers' personal details being placed at risk. Nintendo Europe, Codemasters and Epic Games all had their databases compromised by attacks and have been in contact with users who may have had personal information compromised. According to all three companies, payment and credit card details were not compromised by the recent attacks...

  • This Link to the Past synthesizer is, to use the parlance of the series' marketing, really rad: every musical cue, sound file, incidental bell and whistle from the SNES original, sits isolated for your enjoyment and creative exploration. However, what's not mentioned in the synth's frontend – but will soon become apparent to dedicated tinkerers – is that the page is actually a comprehensive compendium of every sound cue in all three 2D originals, unlockable via its own little mouse-driven, Metroid-cameo-featuring side-quest. Click through for spoilers regarding that quest!...

  • 3DS owner? Listen, if you also have a DSi stocked with download titles and a copy of Ridge Racer 3D, you may want to hold off on installing the latest 3DS system update. The update, which adds an Internet browser to the home screen and crucially allows your DSi purchases to be transferred to the 3DS, has been confirmed by Nintendo to contain hinky code that can crash Ridge Racer 3D.

  • Capcom is weeks away from dropping Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D on western shores, and to make sure we're still stoked about the arrival of the 3DS zombie-shooter, it's delivered a fresh batch of promo pics showing off the alternate costumes available for each of the eight main characters. From Hunk in grim reaper garb, to Rebecca playing naughty nurse, Wesker getting his freak on, and Barry looking...uh...patriotic(?) in his pseudo gigalo outfit, it looks like there will be something to suit every fashion taste...

  • Nintendo's newly-unveiled Wii U has consumers resisting consensus and the games world's most esteemed journalists descending into schizophrenic fits of praige (praise/rage, look it up), but shareholder confidence in the company was definitively lowered by their E3 showing. Nintendo's share price fell to the lowest in over five years following their press conference, with analysts attributing the drop to disappointment in the new console.

  • Nintendo let loose with a ton of new info today, and while the Wii U was defintely the biggest bombshell, there was a ton of great news for current and potential 3DS owners. New trailers were released for pretty much all the upcoming major games, and we've collected the all right here for your convienience.

  • Though it was only mentioned in passing, Nintendo has announced a new Super Smash Bros. game for both Wii U and the 3DS. Interstingly, the game will include multiplayer connectivity between both consoles. The game development is being overseen by series veteran Masahiro Sakurai of HAL who's currently working on the 3DS game Kid Icarus: Uprising.

  • Poor Luigi, he launched the GameCube with a cute game that nobody gave a chance. Sure it wasn’t the Mario launch game everyone wanted, and it got the GC off to a poor start, but Luigi's Mansion was a cool concept. Everyone thought it was the last time Luigi would star in his own game, that he’d never be free of Mario’s shadow. Then, in the shocking opening to the Nintendo press conference, Luigi’s Mansion 2 was revealed...

  •

Teased at GDC this year, a whole new Mario game made for the 3DS was announced but was painfully short on info. Fortunately, everything changed at today’s Nintendo press conference. Like it was plucked out of the minds of every Mario 3 lover, it looks like a fully 3D Mario that’s incredibly reverent to Mario’s history. And yes, there is a Tanooki suit...
