3DS sales in December broke Japanese sales record

Almost one and a half million 3D handheld were sold last month across the Pacific

Words: on January 6, 2012

Remember about six months ago when it seemed like every news story was about another 3DS stumble? Now it seems like a day can’t go by without news of the system’s crazy huge sales. Today’s might be the most impressive yet, as it turns out that in Japan last December the 3DS moved more units in one month than any other system in recorded history.

The 3DS sold 1,492,931 units during that month, topping any monthly sales figure released since Media Create began collecting weekly Japanese sales data in 1997. The demand reached such heights no doubt thanks to the combined crazy popularity of Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7, and Monster Hunter 3G. Each of those games also sold more than a million copies during the month, and for those counting, the PS Vita only sold 402,794 units in December (though it only was out for less than half the month). Meanwhile, Nintendo of America announced earlier this week that the 3DS sold 4 million total systems in the US. Can Nintendo keep this momentum going?

Maybe we can stop hearing the 3DS being used as a punchline every time the gaming media wants to hate on somebody. You guys haven't been to bad but G4 in particular have been relentless. Games sell systems. It's that simple.

You gotta have games to sell a system and the games are here now. Good news, been really enjoying Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7. Still need to pick up Star Fox.

Record month, outpacing both the DS and Wii first year sales, and a killer 2012 lineup (RE: Revelations, Kid Icarus Uprising, Heroes of Ruin, Luigi's Mansion 2, Paper Mario, Bravery Default, etc.). Surely this could only mean one thing; Nintendo is DOOMED!

Nintendo should release snes games on the 3ds virtual console. That would be like printing money.

They'd better be cooking up a new 3D Zelda game or something else otherwise it's not going to last long. Hopefully those strong numbers will draw more 3rd party developers to jump in.

They also really need to expand the Virtual Console... its horribly lacking right now.

I didn't follow videogame news that intently back then, but were the Legend of Zeldas on the DS really THAT big a system sellers? I don't really...remember them being.

There's loads of other great stuff coming for the 3DS. It just needs to get here.

No. Unless Nintendo has million month seller after million month seller.
