20 MASSIVE games of early 2010

17: No More Heroes:
Desperate Struggle - Wii

Expected release: January – March

Should you care?

If you still have a Wii, then without a single doubt. We know we touted the original No More Heroes as a sign that the Wii was turning into a proper console, and we know that didn’t happen. And we know most of you have probably long since given up and launched your little white waggle boxes towards Ebay. But seriously, if you still have one, you need to pay attention to No More Heroes’ sequel.

The original NMH game is one of the sharpest, wittiest, weirdest, funniest, coolest and most stylish games of this generation so far, platform irrelevant. Suda 51’s schlock action masterpiece is an orgy of mindless violence focused through an intelligent, imaginative, media-savvy lens by the Japanese videogame Tarantino. There is very little chance of this one being any less.

18. God of War III - PS3

Expected release: March

Should you care?

We know we’re not helping the unfortunate Bayonetta/Dante’s Inferno/GoW situation here, but unless you’re sick of God of War by now, yes. The first two God of War games were brilliantly-paced, immediately satisfying kill-‘em-ups that between them distilled everything a gratuitous action game should be. GoW III looks to be more of the same, but a lot prettier and with an even greater sense of scale. If you’re happy with that, you’re going to be ecstatic in March.

19. MAG - PS3

Expected release: January

Should you care?

It depends what you want from your shooters. If you’re all about high-flying, Halo-style cartoon heroics or pacey Call of Duty run-and-gun, you might want to think twice. If you want a vast, tactical battlefield, genuinely emergent gameplay and a real sense of taking part in a full-scale war, then MAG is your game. 256 players. A proper, squad-based command structure. Bloody huge maps. MAG is something completely new for consoles and provided the players themselves don’t just turn it into one big clusterf*ck, it could be something a bit special. Whether it’ll be special enough to drag enough people away from Modern Warefare 2 though, remains to be seen.

Not yet, which our cynical minds find surprising given the scale of the project.

20. Red Dead Redemption - Multi

Expected release: Jan - April

Should you care?

If you agree with us that the wild west is a vastly undervalued setting when it comes to video games, then certainly. The historical realm of dust and varmints has had a bit of a renaissance lately thanks to the pretty good Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood, but how much better does GTA: Dodge City sound? Our last preview couldn’t have been more glowing if it had been written in Chernobyl, so we have high hopes that this much upgraded sequel is going to land instantly in the Rockstar hall of fame when it eventually launches.

Hell yes. We were originally supposed to get RDR this month, but extra development time has taken its toll on that release date. But it just means that the final game is going to be even better, so we’ll try to hold back on the sulking.

re: the omissions. This list is of the games coming out in EARLY 2010. Max Payne 3 and The Last Guardian are currently only down for some time next year, and to be honest we'd be very surprised to see either of them hit during the period covered by this article. Sorry guys, but it's just probably not going to happen. As for Mass Effect 2, yeah, we just clean forgot that one. Consider this its entry.
  • TheDude - October 6, 2009 1:14 a.m.

    Max Payne 3?
  • montyburns - October 6, 2009 12:39 a.m.

I must say I'm not convinced with your list either. Anyway, I do think that Gran Turismo 5 is coming out TOO LATE and is now facing some good rivalry with games like Need for Speed: Shift, Project Gotham Racing, Dirt2 and others. I mean, GT WAS the best driving simulator on videogames... now is not the only one. Hey, and by the way, you really mistreated PS3 on this list.
  • EvilEdgar5993 - October 5, 2009 10:33 p.m.

this article both excites me and pisses me the hell off, for one i love the fact that they put bishock 2, red dead redemption, and splinter cell on this list, but y the hell didnt the even put mass effect 2, both the best xbox 360 and game of all time in general, y ???????
  • Kytl - October 5, 2009 9:12 p.m.

well for the 2 Wii games on the list, I might get them later but I want to get Monster Hunter tri first
  • GameManiac - October 5, 2009 6:43 p.m.

GT5 is all the more reason that I REALLY should consider buying a PS3.
  • 1One1Winged1Angel - October 5, 2009 4:32 p.m.

What the heck.. How can u add a trillion play-them-today-forget-what-the-hell-the-story-was-the-day-after shooters on the list and then not at The Last Guardian.. That doesn't make any sense at all -__________________-'' very dissapointing GR .
