10 games guaranteed to give you gamer rage

The level: Down the tubes. The source of our gamer rage: The heart attack-baiting, horrendously twitchy underwater pod sections. As Jim, you have to travel through an underwater layer, briefly having to pilot a bizarre pod-like vehicle at select points. Needless to say, it’s infuriating.

Above: Needlessly twitchy hell in 16-bit cartridge form

Not only are the controls far too sensitive for the SNES and Genesis/Mega Drive D-pads – meaning the slightest press of a direction sends you flying. But you also have to manoeuvre through maze-like underground caverns. Hit the edge too many times and your vehicle will crack like a Fabergé Egg. Sound needlessly tough? Well, throw in a scrotum-crushingly strict time limit and you’ll understand why we’re physically grinding our teeth down to the gum as we type this.

In football they say penalty shootouts are a lottery. Trouble is, in PES, we forgot to buy our tickets. In Konami's game pens are random, rigged and bewildering. With no on-screen power bar, it’s impossible to judge the power of your shots. At best, it’s guess work. At worst, a test of Zen-like calm. Some go smoothly. Some not so. And others just go completely awry for no reason. This, children, is PES’ shameless scripting, ‘cooking’ or predetermining the outcome of the match.

Above: PES bringing that bewildering miss to the boil

The perfect example? The game rewards you a massively soft pen for an innocuous tackle. Great, you think. Then your player steps up, composes himself, and sends it thirty feet over the bar, even though you were clearly aiming it in the bottom corner. Subsequently, bringing our gamer rage to the boil.

Can you spell ‘f**k off, Skate 2?’ One of the most challenging missions in the game sees you take on Eric Koston and Mike Carroll. The two skating legends start pulling tricks so ridiculous most SKATE players will probably develop arthritis trying to replicate them. The only way to beat the pros is to nail their tricks until one of them falls off their board, giving you the chance to force them to copy the moves you set. Trouble is, they almost always land their tricks with supercomputer-esque efficiency.

Forcing them to make that error, so you can get into this position of power, is soul destroying. And that’s what really gets our gamer rage going, not only the difficulty of the tricks, but the Swiss watch-like consistency of the A.I. God, it’s all coming back. Remember, now, deep breathes… deep breathes… find that happy place.

You guys are retarded, you probably drive too close to the train when Big Smoke is trying to shoot it. You need to give him a clear shot. It's pretty easy.

I've played through San Andreas 6 times and Wrong side of the tracks is one if not the hardest mission in the game. You would think you should get a little distance from the train to let smoke shoot those bastards on the train but the trick is to drive a foot away from the train and smoke will kill them much faster. San Andreas is my favorite game.

oh man there are plenty of games that have moments that make you want to throw your controller out the window and put your head through the wall. so make another article like this please. the most recent ones for me are in the god of war collection. challenge of the gods 10 which i finally beat after epically failing hard for like 3 hours. and challenge of the titans 4 which is almost worse but i have yet to beat it because its so frustrating and not fun at all but i must have that platinum

Hahahaha Gamer rage. The sole destroyer of a rented COD 4 disc AND NEARLY MY XBOX (That epilogue. Jesus I hope the people who thought of that part were Kicked in the nuts for that one) when I gave my Xbox a gamer induced rage kick to the preverbial chops (and man oh man did that kick feel good) As well the main reason one of my controllers is partially busted. Still and someone correct me if I'm wrong. But is anyone else finding it hard to swallow the rage with Batman Arkham asylum's combat challenges (mostly due to a twitchy combat system that blocks arteries better then it blocks enemy attacks). Of course none of this compares to HOW FRUSTRATINGLY ANNOYING TYPING A SLIGHTLY LONGER THEN NORMAL RANT IS IN THE COMMENTS SECTION OF GAMESRADAR! SERIOUSLY IT WON’T SCROLL DOWN PAST A CERTAIN POINT! Lolz :)

The blue shell is the sole reason why I can never, not in a million years, get everything in Mario kart wii. It's the worst in that game! So many places. So many blue shells! ReCaptcha: a2 steelier

For the "Can you spell girl?" review, it may be either me, or pure luck, but the guy is actually REALLY easy for me, because he keeps falling out of his board (I've only got one letter).

DOA 4 should be on this list. That game used to annoy the hell out of me.

general raam (Gear of War) it took me close to a dozen times on hardcore to dispose of him, my xbox controller bounced off the floor at least three times lol. Most recently ai sheva (Resident Evil 5) she loves getting herself killed.

The TIE fighter last summer and Seth this year, were 2 of the biggest controller throwing moments of my gaming career... The force grip lock on in FU was so horribly flawed, psy-ops for the PS2 handled better than that. And before i got good at SF4 getting repeatedly spinning piledriven by seth got so god damn frustrating i had to take my ass online just to loose in a less stressful way... Good article.

@heyexclamationpoint Which part? The near impossible jump to get out of the dam, or the timed swim through trap infested water to disarm the bombs? Of course, hard as that was, I found the blind jump with the wrong enemy set in the sewers in the level after the dam to be what took me 10 years to beat that game.

Certainly not a Top-10 game on anyone's list, but Driver 2 had my top gamer rage moment that ultimately kept me from ever beating the game. I played through the story and on the next-to-last mission, you had to follow an enemy vehicle and destroy it under a time limit. Not too difficult, right? Wrong, when you consider the near indestructability of the other car and the fact that it could only take damage when you touched it with your car. After many failed attempts, I finally managed to ram the enemy car into a tree only to watch as his damage gauge did not budge the slightest. So, I go to ram him while he's jammed against the tree, only to have him shake loose as I close in, causing me to hit the same tree and total my car. My PS1 controller exploded as it hit the floor, the R1 and R2 buttons narrowly missing my face. The game has never been allowed near any of my consoles since, but I refuse to dispose of it in hopes that I'll spare someone else a similar fate.

I crushed a PS2 controller in my hands trying get Tidus's ultimate weapon in Final Fantasy 10. That chocobo race either took you three tries, or 14 hours without a break of 30 second races. I've never been filled with so much rage in my life as I had been when trying to get that clock to 0'00". I'm shocked that FFX didn't make the list.

now i havent play SF4, but if seth is harder than jinpachi thats probly best. one time i got so mad i lost control of my breathing and i had to go lay down. freakin chest beam
  • d0x - March 29, 2009 10:03 p.m.

The first time I fought Seth I beat him in under a min on normal. Each subsequent time hasnt gone as quickly but he's never pissed me off. I know I am in a very small minority.
  • kamikaz3e124 - March 29, 2009 5:19 p.m.

To me, one game that gave me gamer rage was N+ for my DS. Every time I failed, I just go into a momentous rage, followed by cursing, blaming it on my sisters, and smashing my DS fiercely...
